Taurus Raging Judge Magnum

taurus_raging_mag_01aTaurus has moved the Judge line solidly into the “big boom” category with the introduction of the Raging Judge Magnum chambered in .454 Casull.

This six-shot, big bore revolver can fire .454 Casull, .45 Colt and 2.5” and 3” .410 shotshells. Due to the power generated by the Casull cartridge, the cylinder has a double lock.

The Raging Judge Magnum is available with either a three-inch or six-inch barrel. The six-inch barrel has a vented rib and can accommodate a scope mount.

Both versions of the Raging Judge Magnum have a fiber optic front sight and a fixed rear.

This Judge is big and heavy. The three-inch model weighs almost 61 ounces, while the six-inch version weighs more than 72 ounces. Holding a floor sample at the SHOT Show, I was impressed by the revolver’s very solid construction.

This is a big jump in the power of the Judge line, and it may prove to be very popular with people living in bear country.

2013 Update

I wanted to give everyone a quick update on the Raging Judge and what Taurus is doing with the line.  Unlike a lot of new guns introduced at the annual trade shows, these guns are still selling strong.  Currently, Taurus offers the Raging Judge in a 3″ and 6.5″ model.  The 3″ model has a matte stainless steel finish and carries a retail price of $1,061.  The 6.5″ model has a glossy black finish and has a MSRP of $1,012.  The longer revolver weighs a whopping 73 ounces, which sounds heavy, but probably feels a little light when shooting the .454 Casull rounds.

There was some previous concern about the locking mechanisms on the Taurus Raging Judge.  The gun has lock points in front and at the back of the cylinder.  I have talked with a lot of people since these guns were introduced, and I have not heard of any failures in these guns.

the print on the side of the barrel is wrong.. it says “.45LC/.454.410 GA”… a 410 is not the gauge, it’s the diameter of the bore.

410 is the proper designation for the 410 gauge shotshell configuration. And the bore size of the 454 Raging Judge is actually 452.

WOW I DONT OWN ONE OF THESE WONDERFUL PISTOLS BUT I SHOT ONE THIS LAST WEEKEND. IN OUR HUNTING LEASE WE HAVE A LOT OF SNAKES. RATTLERS AND MOCCASINS MOSTLY. JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IN OUR LEASE HAS KILLED ONE OR MORE SNAKES. I WEAR SNAKE BOOTS BECAUSE OF ALL THE SNAKES. I ASKED THE OWNER OF THE PISTOL IF I COULD ALSO KILL A HOG WITH IT. HE SAID IT DOES NOT SHOOT ANYTHING MORE POWERFUL THAN A 45 LONG COLTS. AND HE SAID HE DOES NOT KNOW IF WE COULD SHOOT PLUS P BULLETS OUT OF IT. BUT NOW I SEE YOU HAVE THE JUDGE MAGNUM. FOR A HUNTER A 45 LONG COLT, UNLESS IT IS PLUS P IS A LITTLE LITE FOR HOGS. ONCE YOU TAKE YOUR FIRST SHOT AT A HOG THEY ALL GO RUNNING AND TO GET A SECOND SHOT OFF WELL AIMED IS DIFFICULT. TO GET OFF MORE THAN ONE SHOT AT A HOG IS RARE SO A DOUBLE LOCK UP IS NO PROBLEM. I HAVE HUNTED HOGS WITH A RIFLE AND OCCASIONALLY I HAVE GOTTEN NEAR SOME SMALL PIGLETS AND MOMMA HOG CHARGED. I WAS LUCKY IN THOSE INSTANCES TO JUMP TO A SMALL SAPPLING AND QUICKLY PULL MY FEET UP. BUT IN THE PROCESS I DROPPED MY RIFLE AFTER MISSING A SNAP SHOT FROM THE FAST UNEXPECTED CHARGE. IT IS THESE TIMES A 454 CASUL BULET IN A JUDGE MAGNUM WOULD BE WELL WELCOMED. AND ONE THAT ALSO SHOOTS 410 SHOT SHELLS FOR SNAKES AT LEAST IN OUR LEASE IS JUST THE TICKET.

WOW THANKS TARUS. I CANT WAIT TO GET A JUDGE MAGNUM.

LET ME ADD A SHORT ADDENDUM TO MY PREVIOUS COMMENT. WHAT I MENT WHEN AFTER JUMPING UP A SAPPLING AND MOMMA HOG HANGS AROUND JUST UNDER MY FEET TEARING UP THE BARK OF THE SAPLING…. HERE IS WHERE A PISTOL COMES IN HANDY. MY 44 WAS A SAVIOR THE LAST TIME THAT HAPPENED. HUNG ON WITH ONE HAND AND LEGS LOCKED AROUND THE SAPPLING WHILE I USED MY OTHER HAND TO PULL AND SHOOT THE NASTY TEMPERED HOG.
I SEE ONE COMMENTER ABOVE THINKS THE DOUBLE LOCK UP IS A HINDRANCE. WELL I GUESS HE IS MAINLY THINKING OF SELF DEFENCE AGAINST A PERSON NOT AN ANIMAL. THE ONLY THINK I CAN SAY TO HIM IS…… GET AN APPROPRIATE WEAPON FOR THE JOB. THIS JUDGE MAGNUM IS APPROPRIATE FOR ME AND I AM SO THANKFUL THAT THEY HAVE MADE IT.

ONE LAST ADDENDUM….. I ALSO HUNT HOGS WITH A PISTOL AND MANY MANY HUNTERS DO. THE 6 INCH VERSION IS JUST THE TICKET. YOU DONT HAVE TO BE RUN UP A SAPPLING TO ENJOY AND HUNT WITH THIS PISTOL. AND LIKE IN MY LEASE TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT THE NUMEROUS PESKY SNAKES ON OUR LEASE IT IS ALMOST LIKE THEY WERE THINKING OF US WHEN THEY MADE IT.

WOW WHAT A PISTOL.
