GHG provides comprehensive coverage of the show on a single page designed for easy navigation and the ability to quickly see the latest announcements.
Above is a simple table of contents to immediately take you to new handguns, new ammo and other places on the page. The newest announcements are at the top of each section.
Let’s jump in!
New Handguns
Looking for a new pistol for 2020? You might want to peruse these guns that were either announced at or before the SHOT Show.
Smith & Wesson M&P380 EZ Range Ready Kit
Capitalizing on the wild success of the company’s M&P 380EZ pistol, Smith & Wesson is now offering a full range kit with the gun. The special “Range Ready Kit” adds a handgun case, Super Cobra eye protection, ear muffs and a pull-through bore cleaner. The best part is the price. S&W set the MSRP at $449.99.
Palmetto State Armory – PSA Glock Compatible Pistol
Update: Palmetto State Armory announced a new Glock clone pistol at the SHOT Show. It is analogous to the Glock 19 Gen3 pistol and will sell for less than $300! Read my article Palmetto State Armory PS9 Dagger: $300 Glock Killer for all of the details.
Palmetto State Armory teased a photo of what appears to be a new Glock-compatible handgun. It is not known if the new pistol will be an 80% frame, completed frame or a complete handgun. However, the gun is marked with the company name and location which would conform with BATFE regulations & law regarding the commercial manufacture of firearms. (Note: See my article on Am I Required to Apply a Serial Number to a Homemade Firearm? for additional information.) Also, look at that hinged trigger. When I have more information, I will share it.
Uberti Dalton Revolver in .45 Colt
As part of the company’s Outlan & Lawman Series, Uberti showed a new historic reproduction called the Dalton. The Dalton revolver is a recreation of the Colt Single Action Army that was found on the body of Bob Dalton, the leader of the notorious Dalton Gang. The revolver is chambered for the .45 Colt (aka .45 Long Colt) cartridge and has a 5.5″ barrel. The grips are of simulated pearl and the frame and barrel are engraved by the Atelier Giovanelli company. The MSRP is $1,109.
Stoeger STR-9 Semi-Automatic Pistol Line Expands
Last year, Stoeger Industries announced a new striker-fired handgun called the STR-9. Chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, the duty-sized pistol seemed to be a contender for the best value in a defensive handgun. This year, the company expanded the line to include an optics-ready model, a 10-round model and a new color option.
Many shooters are moving toward red dot optics for their defensive pistols. Stoeger now offers an STR-9 Optics Ready model that comes with and optics cut slide and four interchangeable plates to allow you to mount your preferred optic to the gun. The gun also comes with interchangeable backstraps, a fiber optic front sight and three magazines. It’s nice to see a company include three magazines instead of just one or two. The price is quite affordable: $399 MSRP.
Sadly, certain areas of the country have fallen victim to the notion that limited capacity magazines somehow affect criminal behavior. For citizens stuck in those areas, Stoeger is now offering STR-9 pistols that ship with magazines limited to 10 rounds. The company offers these with your choice of 1, 2 or 3 magazines. Pricing runs from $329 – $449 depending on how many mags you buy and if you opt for standard or tritium night sights.
The final new addition to the STR-9 line is a model finished in Flat Dark Earth (FDE). The slide has a Cerakote FDE finish while the frame uses an FDE colored polymer. Three mags are included standard. These cost a little more money at $439.
KelTec P11 Discontinued
Formerly known as Kel-Tec, KelTec announced the company discontinued the P11 9mm pistols. I suspect something new is coming as a replacement.
Patriot Ordnance Factory P19 Pistol
Patriot Ordnance Factory announced the P19: a 9mm pistol that is parts compatible with the ubiquitous Glock 19. The gun uses a new frame designed by POF with a flared magazine well, oversized trigger guard, enhanced magazine release, interchangeable backstraps and a beavertail to prevent slide bit for folks with large hands.
The slide is cut for the Trijicon RMR and other optics with the same footprint. A front fiber optic sight is matched to a blacked-out rear. POF uses a match grade barrel. The P19 is chambered in 9mm.
POF expects to ship on February 1. It has an MSRP of $1,124.99.
Culper Precision Atomic 6
Culper Precision has a new Glock-compatible pistol based on the Nomad 9 Gen 4 frame. Called the Atomic 6, the pistol has a range of custom and semi-custom parts including a unique slide.
The Atomic 6 slide is made of stainless steel and co-cured carbon fiber to reduce weight and “improve performance.” Full assembled, the slide weighs 7 ounces. Overall, this Glock 19-sized pistol only weighs 17 ounces (unloaded.) The slide is cut for a Trijicon RMR and includes a plate with titanium screws.
The pistols have a range of features such as including both threaded and non-threaded match grade barrels, Zev Pro parts, dual-stage guide rod, Apex trigger and your choice of suppressor height or standard height Trijicon sights.
Diamondback DBX in FN 5.7x28mm
New from Diamondback Firearms is the DBX. This pistol is chambered for the 5.7×28 cartridge developed by FN Herstal. It uses a dual-piston system with a side charging handle. More information on the gun is in my article Diamondback DBX – Dual Piston Pistol.
Diamondback Firearms is the third company that announced a new 5.7×28 chambered gun at the SHOT Show.
Third Generation FoldAR
FoldAR announced its third generation of double folding AR pistol. The updated guns have an adjustable gas block, a lever pull lanyard and other improvements.
The new gun folds at the buffer tube and at the barrel. When folded, the 25.75″ long gun is only 10.75″ long and 5.75″ wide. Pistol versions of the gun come with the company’s stabilization brace. The company also offers an SBR version with a TREX stock. These pistols are chambered in .223 Wilde. The base price is listed as $1,999.
Cimarron Firearms Bad Boy in 10mm
If you like single-action revolvers and the 10mm Auto cartridge, Cimarron offers you the new Bad Boy. Based on the company’s existing Bad Boy line, the new guns chamber six rounds and have an 8″ octagonal barrel. The MSRP is $726.05.
Wraithworks WARSCORP9
Wraithworks announced the WARSCORP9: a new AR-style pistol chambered in 9mm and fed by Scorpion EVO magazines. The guns will have 8.5″ threaded barrels, an SB Tactical SBA3 arm brace, ambidextrous safety, ambidextrous bolt catch and an aluminum 7″ forend with M-LOK attachment points. At least some of the guns come with a Franklin Arms BFSIII binary trigger.
Breaking from typical AR-style firearms, the WARSCORP9 has a left-side, non-recirpocating charging handle. In another deviation, the gun has both paddle and button magazine releases. Thanks to Manticore Arms for sharing the information and photos of the new gun.
Springfield Armory Ronin Operator 1911
Springfield Armory announced a new 1911 combat handgun with classic styling, modern manufacturing techniques and an affordable price. Called the Ronin Operator 1911, this pistol is a full-sized handgun with a match grade 5″ barrel, fiber optic front sight, a tactical rear sight and those gorgeous crossed cannon laminate grips. Springfield Armory will offer the pistol in both .45 ACP and 9mm. Magazine capacities are 8- and 9-rounds respectively. The MSRP is pleasingly affordable at just $849. For a quality 1911, that ain’t bad.
Update: It looks like PSA has a limited number of them in stock here.
Taurus Raging Hunter Executive
Taurus is teasing a new Raging Hunter Executive in its 2020 product catalog. The only information given on the new gun is that it will be available in the first quarter of this year. Also, the company only offers a tease image that appears to show cuts in the barrel shroud. When I get more information, I will share it here.
[Editor’s note: PSA has a full range of Taurus Raging Hunter revolvers in stock here.]
Laugo Alien Pistols: Coming to America
Lancer Systems announced the company was now the exclusive importer of the Alien pistol made by Laugo Arms Czechoslovakia. Alien pistols are semi-automatic handguns that use a gas delayed blowback system with a fixed barrel. The design is said to improve accuracy and reduce muzzle flip. When combined with the pistol’s low bore axis, the muzzle flip should be noticeably less than with many conventional handguns.
Another interesting aspect of the Laugo Alien is that it has a top rail in the center of the slide that does not reciprocate. In other words, the sights never move. Also, the barrel is seated in the frame, below the slide – not unlike how the Chiappa Rhino’s barrel is below the under over lug. It’s a neat system.
Initially, the company will sell a limited-run (500 units) Signature Edition kit that includes the gun, magazines and a number of accessories. The guns are expected to ship in late spring. Pre-orders are being accepted now with a deposit of $2,500. The balance of the gun’s price would be payable on delivery.
CMMG Mk57 Pistols and Conversion Kits
CMMG announced a pair of new AR pistols and a new conversion kit for AR15-type lowers. Both the pistols and the conversion kits are designed for the 5.7×28 cartridge. The interesting thing about these guns is that they use the standard magazine well.
Pistols will be offered in two variants: a Banshee 300 pistol and the Banshee 100. The 300 has a 5″ barrel and 5-position pistol brace while the 100 deletes the brace and increases the barrel length to 8″. Pricing starts at $1,099. guns come with 40-round magazines.
Called the Mk57, the new conversion kit is offered in three different barrel lengths: 5″, 8″ and 16″. Pricing starts at $774.95. All of the kits come with at least one 40-round magazine and a complete upper assembly.
It feels like it is out of nowhere, but suddenly there are multiple new 5.7×28 options on the market with new ammo and guns being announced at this SHOT Show.
Taurus Defender 856
An evolution of the existing 856 line, the new Defender 856 revolvers feature 3″ barrels and front night sights. The additional length, as compared to the existing 2″ models, gives the handguns a longer sight radius for improved accuracy and increased bullet velocity. The guns are chambered for the .38 Special and rated for +P ammo. Defender 856 revolvers hold six rounds. Four of the models wear Hogue rubber grips. One upgraded model sports VZ Grips while the final version has Altamont walnut grips. The MSRP will start at $429 for these wheelguns. For additional information on the existing line of guns, see my article on the Taurus 856.
Mossberg MC2c
After the introduction of the subcompact MC1sc, Mossberg has been running wide open on its handgun production. The newest member of the company’s pistol family is the MC2c. This is a scaled-up version of the original subcompact gun with a longer barrel, increased magazine capacity and larger grip. There will be five variations available at launch that will include models with and without manual safeties.
Glock 44 in .22 Long Rifle (Updated)
Update: Palmetto State Armory already has the Glock 44 in stock and ready to ship. This is several days before the company said the guns would be available.
Glock announced a new pistol chambered in .22 LR. The new Glock 44 pistol is a lightweight pistol chambered for the popular rimfire cartridge. The gun is similar in size to the Glock 19 and appears to have several of the Gen5 features including interchangeable backstraps and a lack of finger grooves on the front of the grip. The magazine has a load assist tab to help load rounds. The standard magazines only hold 10 rounds, so I expect to see aftermarket solutions from ETS and Magpul before too long.
This would seem to be a great addition to the company’s line as there have been many .22 LR conversion kits sold to Glock owners for years. I’m an owner of an Advantage Arms conversion kit for my Glock 19. It’s a lot of fun and has been a great teaching tool when I was training my kids how to handle a pistol. I’m betting the Glock 44 will be a very good seller.
Upgraded Heckler & Koch VP9
When the HK VP9 was introduced, I thought it was one of the best pistols on the market. Years later, I still think it is one of the best options for a full-sized fighting handgun. For the new year, Heckler & Koch updated the pistols with a number of new features:
- new 17-round flush-fit magazines
- new sights with a high visibility front sight and a serrated black rear
- optic cut slide (cap installed standard)
HK states the guns should ship by the end of January 2020. Plates for different optics are sold separately from the gun. The MSRP for the pistol is $799. You can read my original HK VP9 review for more information about the line. These HK VP9 holsters will fit the new guns as well as the originals.
Springfield Armory XD-M Elite
Springfield Armory’s latest pistol is the XD-M Elite. Based on the popular XD-M handgun, the Elite adds the new META trigger and a removable magazine well. The company states the META (Match Enhanced Trigger Assembly) is the “finest factory trigger available in a polymer-framed pistol.” That’s a pretty tall order, and I look forward to testing that claim on the range soon.
There are four Elite models: the Elite 3.8″, Elite 4.5″, Elite 4.5″ Tactical OSP and the Elite 5.25″ Precision. Guns are only available in 9mm. Standard magazine capacity is 20 or 22 rounds depending on the model. The MSRP ranges from $559 to $709.
80% Arms GST-9 Pistol Kits
The build-your-own handgun community continues to grow. Aiming to meet some of that demand is the new pistol build kit from 80% Arms. This kit contains almost everything you need to build a pistol that is compatible with the Gen1-Gen3 Glock pistols.
But, it is a more feature rich design than any of the Glock branded pistols it is compatible with. For example, the grip is modular – allowing you to swap in and remove a magazine well extension for G17 or G19 lengths without moving the slide to a whole new frame. Internal surfaces are nickel coated for improved lubricity. The company also states the grip angle and frame contouring offer better ergonomics than its Glock counterparts.
The kit will include a GST-9 frame and grip extension, a complete The Wraith RMR cut slide assembly, AlphaWolf black fluted barrel and an OEM Glock lower parts kit. The kit will cost $749 and is expect to ship in the spring.
Note: The company is stating that BATFE is preventing them from selling the kit with a jig and frame rails. So, you will need to purchase those separately. The full price is $29.99 for those, but is $19.99 during the pre-order.
German SIG SAUER Guns to be Imported by Legacy Sports International
Legacy Sports International announced a partnership agreement with SIG SAUER Germany that makes Legacy the exclusive US importer of German made firearms. This means guns like the SIG P210 and P226 X-Series will only be available through Legacy Sports International.
I wonder if SIG SAUER Germany will attempt to compete with SIG SAUER (US) directly, or only sell non-duplicative products.
Auto-Ordnance Custom Liberty
Auto-Ordnance announced a new commemorative pistol called the Liberty 1911. Based on the vintage Browning design, the new pistol has a variety of patriotic-themed icons as part of the gun’s design. At its core, it is a .45 ACP 1911 with a 5″ barrel, 7-round magazine and GI-style sights. The Liberty 1911 will sell for $1,215 and can be ordered immediately.
Smith & Wesson Performance Center CORE & Ported M&P M2.0 Pistols
Smith & Wesson announced 12 new Performance Center guns in the M&P M2.0 line. There are three basic models and four options within each model. They are:
M&P M2.0 C.O.R.E. Pro Series – These pistols have the company’s Competition Optics Ready (C.O.R.E.) slide with an optics mounting kit. No red dot is included. The guns have tall, three-dot iron sights to co-witness through your red dot sight. The Performance Center tunes the action and installs an adjustable overtravel stop for the trigger. Guns can be had in 9mm or .40 S&W and with either a 4.25″ or 5″ barrel. The MSRP for the 4.25″ gun is $700 while the longer gun is set at $721.
Ported M&P M2.0 – Instead of an optic cut slide, the Performance Center installs adjustable fiber optic sights. Both the barrel and slide are ported to mitigate muzzle rise when shooting. Like the other guns, these have tuned actions and an adjustable trigger stop. 9mm and .40 caliber variants are available with your choice of a 4.25″ or 5″ barrel. Pricing starts at $700 on these.
Ported M&P M2.0 C.O.R.E. – If you want a red dot and a ported barrel, this is the version for you. It has the optics cut C.O.R.E. slide and tall, 3-dot sights plus the porting. You also get the tuned action and overtravel stop. As with the others, you get your choice between two barrel lengths. Suggested prices are $714 and $735 respectively.
Angstadt Arms MDP-9 Pistol
Angstadt Arms impressed me from the first time I met their team in the basement of the SHOT Show some years back. The owner was plain-spoken, direct and enthusiastic about the company’s guns. For 2020, the company has a new PDW-style weapon called the MDP-9 that seems to capture that enthusiasm while being direct in its application as a defensive tool.
Chambered in 9mm, this new handgun uses a roller delayed blowback action and feeds from Glock pistol magazines. It has a 5.85″ barrel and an overall length of just 14″. The gun weighs 3.6 pounds unloaded.
At the back of the gun is a Picatinny type rail that allows you to add an SB Tactical arm brace. Braces are an optional add on from the company.
The guns uses AR-style controls and has a non-reciprocating charging handle that can be swapped to the left or right side. Shipping is expected to being in the second quarter of 2020. Pricing starts at $2,599. Additional information is available on the company’s website.
KRISS Vector SDP-SB
KRISS USA announced a pistol version of its new Vector CRB carbine (scroll down to the long gun section for more on those.)
The Vector SDP-SB is a .22 LR chambered pistol with a SB Tactical pistol brace. It uses linear blowback operation and feeds from 10-round magazines. The company will also offer 30-round magazines for the vast majority of the country that doesn’t limit law-abiding citizens to arbitrary capacities.
It is equipped with a 6.5″ threaded barrel and low profile sights. The Picatinny rail along the top allows you to add a red dot or scope without much fuss. Color options will initially be black, flat dark earth and alpine white. MSRPs will start at $649.
See the entire line of KRISS SDP-SB at Palmetto State Armory.
Colt Python Revolver in .357 Magnum
As reader Brett described it (scroll down to the comments,) the new Colt Python was the worst kept secret in the industry. Also – a special thanks to him for running down some of the early on the information about this gun.
So, is the Python back? Yes and no. Colt announced a new Python with the same external dimensions as the original guns, but the gun is not the same on the inside.
The guns will be offered in 4.25″ and 6″ models. Both have a stainless steel finish – sorry, no blued guns – and carry a MSRP of $1,499. They are chambered in .357 Magnum and hold 6 rounds.
Unlike the original guns, these revolvers have redesigned internals and 12 fewer parts. Additionally, the company beefed up the area under the rear sight (30% more steel) and is using modern alloys for what is hopefully a stronger revolver. Colt states they also redesigned the rear sight. Hopefully, these changes will all improve on the original Python experience.
So, if you are a Python fan, Colt has a new gun for you. Non-production guns tested by a hand-selected group of gun writers last fall are said to be slick shooters. I look forward to seeing how production guns run. I want a blued Python, though that isn’t likely any time soon. It is said the mysteries of the original blueing work have been lost to time.
Mossberg MC1sc in FDE
Introduced at last year’s SHOT Show, the MC1sc appears to be a popular pistol for concealed carry. Expanding the line for 2020, O.F. Mossberg & Sons added flat dark earth models.
One is the standard version while the other has the cross-bolt safety. Both have an MSRP of $428. I’m hoping to see some more companies come out and support this with additional Mossberg MC1sc holsters.
Walther CCP M2 in .380 ACP
There was some talk about this gun last year, but Carl Walther GmbH is now throwing its weight behind the pistol, will show it at the SHOT Show and will offer it for sale shortly.
The CCP (and current M2 version) pistol was designed to be an easy to manipulate pistol that uses a gas-delayed blowback operation with a fixed barrel. This is a significant variation from most modern pistol designs, but it is one that seems to work well for the handgun.
Prior CCP M2 pistols have been chambered in 9mm only. The .380 ACP makes sense to me. As the gun has an easy to manipulate slide and relatively soft recoil, chambering it for a modest cartridge like the .380 would seem to make this a good choice for people with reduced hand strength. This is the same market that Smith & Wesson caters to with the EZ line of guns and Ruger is now chasing with the Lite Rack LCP II. (More on both of these guns farther down in this section.)
The guns will be available in all black or black frame with a stainless slide. Magazines will hold 8 rounds. Unloaded, the guns weigh about 20 ounces. The guns are identical in size to the 9mm versions so existing Walther CCP holsters should fit this gun.
Ruger-57
Sturm, Ruger & Co. announced an all-new pistol design chambered for the 5.7×28 cartridge. This pistol is a direct competitor to the FN Five-seveN pistol and, to a lesser extent, the KelTec PMR30.
It offers target sights, mounting plates for red dot optics and many more features. Read my Ruger-57 article for additional details. These have been selling extremely quickly. PSA gets them in regularly and keeps a fair price on them.
Patriot Ordnance Factory Rebel in .22 Long Rifle Rimfire Ammunition
Patriot Ordnance Factory announced a new pistol chambered for the .22 LR called the Rebel .22. It is a unique design that incorporates features of the Ruger 10/22 and AR platforms into a new handgun.
The new gun feeds from Ruger 10/22 magazines, uses a Mission First Tactical arm brace, accepts AR-pattern triggers, safety selectors and stock options. Although the company does not say, it appears the pistol grip is also AR compatible.
These guns have an 8″ barrel that is threaded for a suppressor and a monolithic M-LOK handguard. The total weight is about 3.25 pounds unloaded. The MSRP is $649.99. POF expects to ship these beginning in March.
Ruger Lite Rack LCP II in .22 LR
Ruger announced a new version of its LCP II line: the Lite Rack LCP II. The new gun is chambered in .22 LR. But even more interestingly, the company built the gun with features for people with relatively weak hand and upper body strength. It has a light recoil spring, Cocking Ears, a redesigned floorplate and a new push-forward thumb safety. Read my full article here. Like the Ruger-57 pistol (scroll up for that one,) this has been flying off of the shelves. PSA is turning them around quickly if you are looking for one.
Taurus 942
Taurus will re-introduce the 942 line of revolvers this year. The new guns will some of the first marked with the company’s new US location in Bainbridge, Georgia. These are compact double-action revolvers that will be offered in both .22 LR and .22 WMR (aka .22 Magnum). However, it doesn’t look like the company will offer a convertible version.
There will be a number of different variations available. In addition to the caliber selection, shooters will be able to select between 2″ and 3″ barrels and the standard or UltraLite frames. For additional information, read my Return of the Taurus 942 article.
Ruger Super GP100 in 9mm
As is typical with Sturm, Ruger & Co., the company began announcing new guns for 2020 several weeks ahead of the SHOT Show. The first of the bunch is the Super GP100 chambered for the 9mm cartridge. The gun uses the same frame size as the .357 Magnum model but has a 9mm length 8-shot cylinder giving it a rather pronounced gap. Combined with the fluting, the stainless steel cylinder is light for faster rotation.
Additional features include polished and optimized internals for a slick double-action trigger pull, Hogue hardwood grips, light chamfering to the chamber mouths, cold hammer-forged 6″ barrel, 11Ëš target crown and a green fiber optic front sight. Three moon clips ship with the gun. MSRP: $1,549
North American Arms AntiVenom
Another NAA gun that will be at the SHOT Show is the new AntiVenom. I don’t have a lot of information about this gun yet, but it is supposed to be chambered in .22 WMR with a 1.625″ barrel and snakeskin-patterned boot grips.
New Colors for the Smith & Wesson M&P 380EZ
Smith & Wesson will offer the M&P 380EZ pistols in two new colors: Robin’s Egg Blue and Prison Pink. It is unclear if these will be offered through limited distributors like the Robin’s Egg version of the M&P22 Compact is.
Chiappa Rhino Match Master
Previously unavailable in the United States, Chiappa hopes to begin selling the Rhino Match Master in the USA soon. The guns are chambered for the soft-shooting .38 Special and fitted with a 6″ barrel. Designed for precision shooting, these wheel guns are good looking and are expected to carry a MSRP of nearly $3,000.
North American Arms Ranger II 4″
North American Arms will launch its new 4″ version of the Ranger II at the SHOT Show. The break-top revolvers are similar to existing Ranger II revolvers including having a 5-shot cylinder. The new, longer-barreled guns will be available for the .22 LR and .22 WMR rimfire cartridges.
Charter Arms Professional
Charter Arms is probably best known for its line of .44 Special revolvers. However, the company makes a lot more than those. In 2020, the company will introduce the new .357 Magnum revolver called the Professional. The company already makes one version of the Professional – the .32 H&R Magnum, 7-shot gun. But, you have to look pretty hard to find it on the company web site. I imagine the new 6-shot .357 gun will be prominently displayed. The base model has a 3″ full underlug barrel with a green fiber optic front sight. Full walnut grips are fitted to the pistol. No price has been announced yet.
Bond Arms Grizzly
Bond Arms is introducing the new Grizzly – a variety of the Rowdy pistol with an extended wood grip for a better handhold. The gun is part of the company’s Rough series that sacrifices a little of the hand polishing in favor of a price that is much friendlier to the family budget. These pistols will be chambered for the .45 Colt and .410 bore shotshell. The Grizzly comes with a leather holster as well. The gun and holster package will retail for about $380.
Chiappa CBR-9 Black Rhino Pistol
Chiappa Firearms will show a new pistol version of its latest SBR that was introduced in 2019. Called the CBR-9 Black Rhino pistol, the new handgun is designed for personal protection and “professional activities.”
Chambered in 9mm, the gun has a steel upper receiver and a lower made of polymer. The magazine fits into the pistol grip portion of the lower. For additional details, please read my article Chiappa CBR-9 Black Rhino Pistol: New Personal Defense Handgun.
Smith & Wesson M&P22C Every Day Carry Kit
Smith & Wesson will introduce a new kit based around the M&P22 Compact in Las Vegas. We don’t have the details on the new kit yet, but it will likely include a holster and possibly a Crimson Trace laser. More details will be added here as they become available.
SCCY DVG1
SCCY will show its new striker-fired 9mm pistol at the show. The new gun is similar in size to the company’s existing CPX-1 and CPX-2, but appears to be a bit thinner. Of course, the big deal is the striker firing mechanism that drops the pull weight to a much lighter 5.5 pounds.
For more information, read my article SCCY DVG1 – New Striker-Fired 9mm Pistol.
Update: We found out SCCY will offer a model with a Crimson Trace red dot optic called the DVG-1RD. It is crazy affordable too.
Altor Pistol
Altor Corporation is now making a single shot, simple pistol with an affordable price tag. The company touts these guns as offering “unmatched simplicity, quality construction, user-friendly design, and exceptional value.” The pistols have a detachable barrel for breech loading and easy cleaning. The company states there are only 6 parts in the gun.
The metal components are made of stainless steel while the polymer is Nylon 6. The overall length of the gun is 6.5″ with a height of 3.5″ and a width of 1.0″ Weight (unloaded) is 10.5 ounces.
The gun’s trigger operation is shown here:
If a single-shot pistol is your game, the company offers a .380 ACP for $119 and a 9mm version for $129.
American Tactical Galeo Pistol
Fitted with a Shockwave-like pistol brace, the new Galeo pistol is based on the company’s Galil rifle that is assembled from parts on a US-made receiver in South Carolina. I expect the same process will be used for these handguns. Barrels will be 13″ in length. The guns will be chambered for the 5.56 NATO cartridge.
FN509 Compact MRD Optics Ready
FN America announced an optics ready version of the FN 509 Compact pistol. These will be available in both black and FDE colors. All of the guns share some common features:
- 9mm
- 10+1 (also take 12- and 15-round magazines)
- tall height (co-witness) all black iron sights
- low profile optics mounting system with plate adapters for more than 10 different optics
- MSRP $799
Henry Repeating Arms Lever Action Axe
Henry Repeating Arms announced a new .410 chambered firearm called the Lever Action Axe. This is a non-NFA, uncategorized firearm in a Mare’s Leg style format.
It is chambered for the .410 shot shell with an axe-handle pistol grip and lever action. The gun holds 5 rounds of 2.5″ shells in the magazine. It has a barrel length of less than 16″ and an overall length of slightly more than 26″. The MSRP is $970.
Smith & Wesson M&P 9EZ Shield
Prediction: The S&W M&P 9EZ will be a great seller for gun shops in 2020. The .380 ACP has been a hit, and I expect the 9mm to follow suit.
I’ve got a more complete look at the gun in my Smith & Wesson M&P9EZ Shield article. You can also buy the gun with a thumb safety here or without the thumb safety here.
Kimber K6s 4″
Kimber Manufacturing announced a pair of 4″ wheelguns in the K6s line. Both of the new guns are chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge and have full underlugs. One is called the Combat. It has 3-dot sights and a set of three-finger, diamond-checked grips that are rounded on the base.
The Target model has a red fiber optic front sight with blacked-out adjustable rear sights. Also, its grips are more squared along the bottom.
My experience with a K6s has been very good and I look forward to shooting these. The MSRP is $989.
STI Staccato R
With news the STI may be discontinuing a large portion of its product line (see Daniel’s article STI International Discontinues 70% of Product Line,) I was unsure what STI might be offering in 2020. It looks like the company will release the Staccato R – a larger version of the Staccato P pistol that was recently added to the catalog.
I don’t have specific details yet on this pistol, but it will likely have a 5″ barrel both otherwise be very similar in features to the P model.
Looks interesting and appears to have a brand new rear sight.
HK SP5 – Semi-Automatic Version of Heckler & Koch MP5
[Edit: The gun can be purchased through PSA here. Keep in mind that supplies are limited and demand seems high]
After decades of demand, Heckler & Koch finally decided to release a “sporting” version of its MP5 submachine gun. The SP5 is a semi-automatic handgun that uses the famous gun’s action, magazines, sights and other parts to give shooters an opportunity to own something close to the original SMG.
Among its features:
- roller delayed blowback operation
- Navy barrel with threaded tri-lug adaptor
- MP5K sights
- paddle magazine release
- 10-, 15- and 30-round magazines
- fluted chamber
- chrome-lined barrel
- includes bungie-type sling
While expensive ($2,799,) it is the only option for a new HK-manufactured gun. I’m looking forward to seeing one with an arm brace.
Wilson Combat Experior M1911 Pistol
The Experior is a new line of 1911-style pistols from Wilson Combat. As you should expect from Wilson, the guns have distinctive styling, match-grade components and accuracy guarantees. But the guns are more than just the standards. The guns are actually a blend of all of the company’s top-end options.
The Experior line is a complete stable of pistols from 3.5″ to 6″ long slides and are available in both 9mm and .45 ACP. WC put together a video demonstrating the Experior:
As you can see in the video, the company is making both single-stack and double-stack pistols.
New Long Guns – Rifles and Shotguns
Shotguns and rifles are always popular at the SHOT Show. While the AR-platform has been a dominant factor in the past two decades, bolt and lever guns have been coming on strong. I expect to see a lot of these in the new year. Here’s a look at what we’ve spotted so far.
Howa Rimfire Gamepro Package
Howa showed its new Rimfire GamePro packages at SHOT Show 2020. The guns are available in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR with 18″ barrels. The bolt action guns feed from detachable box magazines and come equipped with NikkoSterling GamePro 3.5-40×44 scopes. Stock color choices are black, green and the Kratos camouflage pattern. The MSRP starts at $699. These appear to be the same as the Howa 1100 Varmint rifle that were seen/leaked on Australian gun shop websites prior to the show.
Howa Mini Action Full Dip
The Full Dip rifles extend camo patterns from the stock to the rest of the gun including the receiver, barrel, scope and rings. New for 2020, Howa extends the Full Dip option to its Mini Action line. These rifles are available in .223 Rem, 6.5 Grendel and 7.62×39 with 20″ heavy barrels. NikkoSterling GamePro 3.5-10×44 scopes are included and the rifles are guaranteed to shoot sub-MOA with a lifetime warranty. Dip options are Kryptek Highlander, Yote and Kratos.
Howa HS Carbon Fiber Rifles
Howa released its new HS Carbon Fiber bolt action rifles. The guns feature 24″ carbon fiber wrapped barrels in a full aluminum bed stock. Barrels are threaded and come with thread protecting caps. The guns are available in 6.5 Creedmoor. Howa offers the guns with stock color options of gray, OD green and in the KUIU camo patterns of Vias 2.0 and Verde 2.0. Optional NikkoSterling Diamond FFP 4-16×44 scopes are also available. Pricing starts at $1,819.
FN SCAR 20S 6.5 Creedmoor
FN American announced a new SCAR rifle: a 20S chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. The new gun is set up for long-range accuracy that should match the cartridge’s abilities. FN USA equipped the gun with:
- 20″ chrome-lined barrel – cold hammer-forged, free-floating
- SureFire ProComp 762 muzzle brake
- Geissele Super Scar match-grade, two-stage trigger
- fixed stock with the ability to adjust LOP and comb height
- Hogue rubber pistol grip
The guns use the standard short-stroke gas piston system with a monolithic aluminum receiver. These will be available in both black and FDE. MSRP: $4,499. PSA is selling these guns for less than $4k.
Stoeger XM1 Air Rifle
Stoeger announced its first pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle at the SHOT Show. Called the XM1, it is available in both .17 and .22 calibers. The new gun has an integrated 2,900 psi/200 BAR tank that can push .22 caliber alloy pellets at 1,000 fps. The smaller .17 caliber pellets have muzzle velocities of up to 1,200 fps. A single tank can run about 50 shots between fills.
Stoeger paid close attention to the ergonomics of the gun. The thumbhole stock, for example, comes with two different height cheekpieces and different sized pistol grips. Likewise, the length of pull can be adjusted with spaces between the stock and recoil pad. Stoeger uses Pro Adaptive Checkering on various places of the weapon that correspond with the various holds shooters are likely to use.
The base model is available in black with fiber optic sights and chambered in .17 caliber only. One step up is a suppressed model which includes a 4×32 scope and can be had in either .17 or .22 caliber. At the top of the range is a suppressed model with a 4×32 scope chambered in .22 caliber only. It has a Realtree EDGE finish. Pricing runs from $199 – $249.
Franchi Instinct Catalyst in 20-Gauge
The Instinct Catalyst line of shotguns is designed to fit female shooters. For 2020, the company added a 20-gauge offering to complement the successful 12-gauge shotguns in this line. As with the original guns, this over-under is designed for smaller stature shooters with a size-appropriate length of pull, comb height and drop. Combined with the 20-gauge chambering, the company believes these new shotguns provide a perfect balance of weight, feel and responsiveness.
Franchi builds these with A-grade satin walnut stocks and forends. The case hardened steel receiver matches the 26″ blued barrels nicely. The company offers these at $1,469 and backs them with a 7-year warranty.
Hatsan PileDriver – Most Powerful Production Air Rifle?
HatsanUSA, Inc. announced its first .50 caliber air rifle: the PileDriver. If the HATSAN information is correct, it is the world’s most powerful production PCP air rifle. How powerful? It can drive a .50 caliber lead bullet to 850 fps for energy in excess of 800 ft-lbs. That’s more than enough power to put down a buck or pig when you place the shot.
The gun is a bullpup design with a 33″ barrel. The 480cc air cylinder is loaded to more than 4,300 psi (300 BAR) and will launch up to 5 .50 caliber bullets at full power.
Hatsan USA will also offer the gun in .45 caliber. It can push the smaller projectiles about 50 fps faster and get an additional shot off before a loss of power.
Uberti 1885 Courteney Stalking Rifle
Well known for their replica firearms, Uberti announced a big game hunting rifle that calls back to a time of exploration and hunting. The new rifle is called the 1885 Courteney Stalking Rifle is is named after F. Courteney Selous. It is chambered in .303 British with a case hardened receiver and AA-Satin Prince of Wales stock. It uses an 1885 falling-block lever action and has a blued 24″ barrel. All guns have a hooded front sight and V-style express rear sight. A version of the gun is available with a base to accept Weaver-type scope rings. A second version deletes the base for open sight shooting only. The MSRP is $1,729.

With a 5-year warranty, the suggested retail price is $929.

They all sport black, synthetic furniture with soft recoil pads and both M-LOK and Picatinny attachment points on the forend. All guns are drilled and tapped for optics and have side loading gates. Additionally, all of the rifles have threaded barrels and contrasting fiber optic sights. The shotgun model is threaded internally for invector-style chokes and has a fiber optic front sight only. CZ Bren 2 Ms Carbine
CZ-USA has its new Bren 2 Ms Carbine on display at SHOT Show 2020. This semi-automatic rifle is based on the select-fire Bren 2 and completes the company’s line of Bren-2 products to the US market. (The pistol version of the rifle was previously released.)
The 5.56 NATO gun uses a short-stroke gas piston system. It has a return spring contained within the action which eliminates the need of a buffer tube like those found on AR platform rifles. End result: you get an adjustable length, folding stock. With the stock folded, the overall length is only 28″.
The Ms designation means that it is a modular system that allows you to easily swap out forends based on your wants and needs. Lowers are made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer to help keep the weight down to a little over 7 pounds (unloaded.) Additional features:
- 16.5″ cold hammer forged barrel
- ambidextrous safety
- 30-round magazines standard (10-round magazines optional)
- ambidextrous bolt catch
- non-reciprocating charging handle that can also serve as a forward assist
- MSRP: $1,999
MARS M19 Mustang
MARS is showing the latest version of its M19 Mustang rifle at the SHOT Show. The company describes the gun as a modular, long recoil action modular rifle. According to the company, the rifle uses the recoil impulse – without any gas system – to function the gun. The company claims the M19 Mustang “runs clean and is free of carbon fouling.”
The barrel reciprocates helps to absorb felt recoil in each shot. According to information published by the company, the rifle “fires high caliber cartridges with minimal to no perceived recoil.”
An ambidextrous charging handle is located on the side of the gun along the barrel. It is non-reciprocating. A folding stock is standard, and yes, the gun can fire with a folded stock.
The MARS M19 Mustang costs $3,499.
Escort Versatile Tactical Shotgun Series
Escort introduced a new line of scatterguns called the Versatile Tactical Shotgun (VTS) series. Escort will make them in a variety of configurations, and I suspect they will appeal to shooters who are more comfortable with rifles than with traditional shotguns. TNW Firearms 9mm LTE Carbine
TNW Firearms announced what it says is the lightest production pistol caliber carbine: the new 9mm LTE. How light is it? 3.95 pounds in rifle trim with a 16″ threaded barrel. This is a no tools required, fast takedown rifle that feeds from Glock-pattern magazines. Like the existing TNW 9mm carbines, this rifle is a blowback rifle that shares some limited compatibility with AR15 pattern rifles.
The new rifle should ship in February with an MSRP of $799. TNW Firearms will also make a pistol version of this gun with an arm brace. That model will retail for $899 and be slightly heavier.
Having shot some of the company’s other guns, I am eager to see what this one will do on the range. If it performs like those do, it will be a winner.
Traditions Firearms NitroFire Muzzleloader
At the SHOT Show 2020, Traditions Firearms pulled the cover off of the new NitroFire muzzleloader. With this gun, Traditions proclaimed “We’ve changed muzzleloading forever.”
Traditions partnered with Federal Premium and Hodgdon Powder to create the Firestick: an encapsulated polymer charge that uses the Triple Eight powder from Hogdon. As a shooter, you load the bullet from the muzzle and then slide one Firestick in through the breech. That’s it.
In addition to being fast, the Firestick is weather resistant and impervious to moisture. Plus, the tolerances on the Firestick is the same as you expect with Federal’s centerfire ammunition.
The NitroFire is a .50 caliber gun with a number of desirable features including:
- 26″ fluted & tapered chromoly barrel with a 1:28″ twist
- Elite XT trigger with rebounding hammer, captive half-cock and cross block trigger safety

The Tuffy Turkey has a bead front sight and a Picatinny rail for adding a red dot optic. On the back of the OD green stock, the company includes a thick rubber recoil pad. A spacer changes the length of pull for adults or kids. As with the other Tuffy stocks, this one has shell holders to give you 10 additional loads at hand. The MSRP is an affordable $210.60.

Air Venturi announced the new Springfield Armory M1A Air Rifle. The air gun uses a spring-piston system with an underlever to launch projectiles. A .177 projectile will move at up to 1,000 fps while a .22 projectile will make up to 800 fps. According to the company, this rifle has a sliding breech system that allows for ample room when loading pellets.

The system is designed to work with both AR-10 and AR-15 style rifles.
The forend is removable without any tools. It has M-LOK and Picatinny rails for the addition of accessories. There are a lot of features that make this interesting for both competitions and possibly sniper work. This looks like a slick system and I can’t wait to get one on the range. To achieve that weight, Savage used a skeletonized receiver while Proof Research delivered a carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel.
I should point out that these are not 16″ barreled guns. Rather these are full-length barrels ranging from 22″-24″. Barrels are threaded for the use of a brake or suppressor. A thread protector is included with the gun.

Stevens 555 Trap
The Stevens guns are known as high quality, but affordable, guns that are made for Savage Arms in Turkey. The new 555 Trap guns are another example of the good value this brand offers. These guns use an aluminum receiver with a steel insert to reinforce the breech. They are scaled to the gauge meaning that heavier gauge will have beefier receivers.
All guns have a shell extractor and tang mounted safety. The stock and fore-end are both made of Turkish walnut. The comb height on the stock is adjustable. Three chokes are included with the gun.
The 555 Trap will be available with either 30″ or 26″ barrels. The 26″ models are known as the 555 Trap Compact. Both the full size and compact models can be had in either 12- or 20-gauge. All guns will carry a suggested retail price of $689.

The stock is called the MDT LSS XL chassis and allows for the adjustment of the length of pull and comb height.
While short and medium-range shots are sure to be on target, the gun really seems ready to make those longer range hits as well. Savage AXIS II Precision
The AXIS II line of rifles is known by many as a great gun with a budget price. So, making a Precision version of the AXIS II might be an excellent way for someone to up their game without breaking the household budget.
As with the 110 Precision (scroll up for that rifle,) Savage Arms uses a MDT chassis though this one is a black aluminum with olive drab green injection molded polymer for the “skin.” Spacers can be used to adjust the length of pull and the cheek riser can get you the perfect comb height. Savage states it is using a gas system to operate these new guns. Called the Dual Regulating Inlive Valve, or DRIV, system, the company claims the guns offer a “new standard for both fit and function.” The company states the DRIV system will work reliably with all kinds of loads – from low-brass target loads to Magnum hunting loads – and all without any manual adjustment of the gas system.
The Renegauge can also be adjusted for length of pull and comb height. Beretta/Benelli interchangeable chokes are used, and the guns come with improved, modified and full chokes. These shotguns are made in the USA.

Thompson/Center Compass Utility
Aimed at hunters on a budget, the new Compass Utility is a bolt-action rifle that keeps the frills to a minimum to make the gun as affordable as possible. Even so, it retains the same MOA accuracy guarantee that the other T/C rifles have.
These rifles are offered solo or with a boresighted 3-9×40 optic. The optic is branded T/C but may be made by sister company Crimson Trace. Pricing starts at $359. I would not be surprised to see these offered for $320 or so at local shops.
T/C offers the Compass Utility in the following calibers:
- .223 Rem/5.56 NATO
- .243 Win
- 6.5 Creedmoor
- .270 Win

The Compass Utility has a 60Ëš bolt handle, three-lug bolt and a flush-fitting rotary magazine. Barrels have a target crown. The triggers are first-generation T/C triggers. Weaver-style scope mount bases are installed at the factory. Compass II rifles (scroll down for information on them) upgrade a number of these items.
Thomson/Center Arms Compass II
Thompson/Center announced it reworked the Compass line and created a second generation of rifles with upgraded features. The new T/C Compass II line has a new trigger that is said to be cleaner than the original and has a pull weight of 3-4 pounds. All guns will be threaded for use with a suppressor or compensator. Additionally, each of the guns has an MOA accuracy guarantee.
T/C will offer standard and compact versions of the gun. The compact rifles will have 16.5″ barrels with an interchangeable buttpad to adjust the length of pull from 12.5″ to 13.375″. This makes them a good candidate for a youth rifle that can grow with your child.
In addition to the standard rifles, the company will offer scoped packages that will include a boresighted 3-9×40 scope from Crimson Trace.
Standard rifles will be available for the following cartridges:
- .223 Rem/5.56 NATO
- .243 Win
- 6.5 Creedmoor
- .270 Win
- .308 Win
- .30-06 Sprg
- 7mm Rem Mag
- .300 Win Mag
Pricing for these guns will start at $405. Local dealers and big box stores will likely have them for a little less.
Compared to the Compass Utility (above,) you get a few upgraded features including a reshaped bolt handle, threaded muzzle and Generation II T/C trigger.
Thompson/Center Venture II
Rounding out the T/C new rifles for the 2020 line is the Venture II. An evolution of the original T/C Venture, the new rifle has the company’s Gen II trigger (3-4 pound pull), a Weather Shield exterior coating for corrosion resistance, Hogue grip panels for an improved grip during inclimate weather, a threaded barrel and an MOA accuracy guarantee.
Pricing starts at $525. The new Venture II rifles will be available in:
- .223 Rem/5.56 NATO

Remington Model Seven with Mossy Oak Camo
Remington is now offering a Model Seven with a Mossy Oak Bottomland camo pattern on a synthetic stock. The rifle is available in .308 Win, 300 BLK and 6.5 Creedmoor. Both the .308 Win and 300 BLK models have a 16.5″ barrel while the 6.5 version has a 20″ barrel. All barrels are threaded for suppressors.
Uintah Precision UPR10 and UPR15 Rifles
Uintah Precision announced it would begin selling complete rifles using a redesigned bolt-action upper. The company has been selling bolt-action uppers for the AR-10 and -15 rifles. However, this move will allow the company to match an upper to a lower for a complete experience.
Customers will be able to buy the guns with Shilen and Preferred Barrels standard or with Proof Research barrels as an upgrade. Also standard are Luth-AR stocks and Velocity single-stage triggers (3 lbs.) Standard calibers will include 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win, .223 Wilde, .224 Valkyrie, 6.5 Grendel, 300 BLK and .308 Win. Other calibers can be had as custom orders. Pricing will start at $1,088.
Rock River Arms RBG-IS – Bolt Action Rifles
Rock River Arms (RRA) made a name for itself in the AR market. Whether it is a softening of the AR market or just a desire to diversify its product offerings, the company is now attempting to establish itself in the precision bolt gun market as well. First up will be a short-action gun in a KRG chassis with a Wilson Arms fluted bull barrel. Initial offerings will be in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Win. These will be fed from AICS magazines. Expect to pay more than $4k for one of these.
Kalashnikov USA KR-103
It might seem odd that a company called Kalashnikov USA makes shotguns and 9mm firearms but none in 7.62×39.
That’s now changed. K-USA will show the new KR-103 at the 2020 SHOT Show. It is completely made in the United States and is based on the SK-74 rifle. The company says it is compatible with “…all AK74/AKM furniture and accessories.”
I’ve toured the company’s Florida facility and shot all of their existing models (excepting this one.) I found the guns to be well made, reliable and accurate. When the company had an issue with its 9mm firearms, it took full ownership of the issue and implemented an immediate fix. I wish all companies took that approach.
The new KR-103 will have a retail price of $999.
Silver Shadow Gilboa DBR in .22 LR
Silver Shadow announced it would be showing its new Gilboa Double Barrel Rifle (DBR) Snake chambered in .22 LR at the SHOT Show.
The Gilboa DBR is an AR-style rifle with two separate fire control systems. The company offers firearms in 5.56 NATO, 300 BLK, 7.62×39, .308 and 9mm. The company first launched the Gilboa DBR Snake in 20013, and this is their first rimfire gun.
Henry SideGate .410 Shotgun and .45-70 Rifle
In November, Henry Repeating Arms announced it would have a pair of new guns at the SHOT Show in January. One is a side gate, lever-action .410 shotgun and the other is a side gate, lever-action rifle chambered for the .45-70 Gov’t. On both guns, the loading gate is on the right side of the receiver. Both models use a removable tube magazine. Both guns will have a retail price of $1,045.
Marlin Model 60 150th Anniversary
In honor of the 150th anniversary of Marlin Firearms, the company is releasing a special edition Model 60. It has a wood stock with commemorative emblem and stainless steel barrel.
New Ammunition
At every SHOT Show, the major ammo makers roll out all kinds of new products. This year is no different. Scroll down to see some of the new things you’ll be able to pick up and shoot.
SK Rimfire Semi-Auto Rifle Ammunition
SK announced a new .22 LR load that is specifically designed for modern, semi-automatic rifles. Called simply “Semi-Auto Rifle” ammunition, the loads are designed to burn clean to improve function and reliability. SK states the ammo runs “flawlessly through any 10/22 style firearms” and other .22 LR chambered rifles. The company estimates the ammo will ship in the Spring of 2020. SK is part of the Nammo Group that includes the Lapua, Vihtavuori and Berger Bullets brands.
New Sierra GameChanger Loads
Sierra Bullets announced two new loaded cartridges in the company’s Game Change line. The first is a 300 BLK cartridge loaded with a 125-grain Tipped GameKing bullet. It is making for 2,115 fps at the muzzle. The second load is a .223 Rem round with a 64-grain Tipped GameKing bullet. This cartridge is good for 3,015 fps from the muzzle. Sierra recommends the .223 round for varmints and dear while the 300 BLK is designed for deer, hog and coyotes.
New Winchester Ammunition 350 Legend Loads
Winchester Ammunition announced two new 350 Legend loads. The first is a 255-grain open tip that is part of the SuperSupressed line. It makes for 1,060 fps at the muzzle for 636 ft-lbs of energy. Through a sound suppressor, the already low blast cartridge should be a fairly quiet load.
The second new offering is in the PowerMax line. This load pushes a 160-grain PowerMax Bonded bullet to 2,225 fps. That works out to be 1,759 ft-lbs of energy.
New Caliber: the BWA 10×100
Blackwater Ammunition announced a new caliber that appears to be suited for long-range shooting. Called the BWA 10×100, the new cartridge will be easy to adapt to existing platforms. For more information, read my introductory article BWA 10×100: New Cartridge with 100-Year-Old Roots.
Federal FireStick
Federal developed a new propellant option for muzzleloading firearms that should increase reliability, shot consistency and speed of loading and unloading. Called the FireStick, the product is a polymer charge that is filled with Hodgdon Triple Eight powder. After loading a bullet from the muzzle end, you slip the FireStick into the breech and add a 209 shotgun primer.
Traditions Firearms developed a muzzleloader specifically for the FireStick. It is called the NitroFire (scroll up to see it.) Hopefully, more FireStick capable models will be developed by Traditions.
Benefits and features include:
- no primer pockets and breech plugs to clean
- no loose powder charges that result in inconsistency and dangerous over-charges
- the encapsulated system eliminates concerns about moisture and rain
- faster and safer unloading
- safe loading – no stacking a bullet on top of powder
A key feature is that once you install a primer, you need not remove it if you later unload the gun without firing it. The primer can safely reside in the charge until the next time you go to shoot.
Reading between the lines, you could install primers in the FireStick when you are preparing to head to the field. Then when loading the gun, you need only insert the bullet then load the primed FireStick.
Federal is offering the FireStick in two charges: 100-grain and 120-grain loads. The FireStick will be sold in packs of 10 for a suggested retail price of $26.95.
New Browning Ammunition Loads
Browning Ammunition announced a number of new loads at SHOT Show 2020. These include:
Bullet Type | Bullet Weight | Velocity | Energy
28 Nosler | Long Range Pro | 160 gr | 3,200 fps | 3,637 ft-lbs |
28 Nosler | BXC | 155 gr | 3,250 fps | 3.635 fps |
28 Nosler | BXS | 139 gr | 3,350 fps | 3,463 ft-lbs |
6mm Creedmoor | BXR | 97 gr | 3,210 fps | 2,219 ft-lbs |
6mm Creedmoor | Long Range Pro | 95 gr | 3,285 fps | 2,276 ft-lbs |
350 Legend | BXR | 155 gr | 2,300 fps | 1,820 ft-lbs |
350 Legend | FMJ | 124 gr | 2,500 fps | 1,721 ft-lbs |
Browning states its 124-grain FMJ is the fastest 350 Legend load currently available on the market (velocity data measured with a 20″ barrel.) The other Legend load uses the company’s BXR bullet that is designed for deer hunting. It uses a copper bullet with a polymer tip for rapid expansion and effective terminal performance.
Fiocchi Blue Guardian Ammo
Designed for personal defense and law enforcement, Fiocchi announced three new ammunition lines under the Blue Guardian brand: Blue Guardian FR, Blue Guardian HP and Blue Guardian SC.
The FR line was developed for high-volume training. In this line, the bullets are lead-free, frangible projectiles that are ballistically matched to the HP line below. Fiocchi uses lead-free and heavy metal-free primers. Initial loads will be offered for the .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .223 Rem and 300 BLK.
As you might guess, the HP line uses lead-free hollow point bullets. Projectiles are designed to fragment upon penetration of soft tissue but disintegrate on impact with hard surfaces such as steel, tile and concrete. Load data is not yet available. I suspect that these are lightweight for caliber, all copper bullets that have higher than typical velocities similar to the Liberty Ammunition Civil Defense line. These will only be made for the .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP cartridges.
The SC line uses solid copper hollow point bullets in this line. These are designed to offer much deeper penetration that the HP line. In addition to the handgun cartridges above, Fiocchi will load version in .223 Rem, 300 BLK (both supersonic and subsonic versions) and 12 gauge slugs.
CCI Maxi-Mag Segmented HP in .22 WMR
CCI announced it had a new .22 WMR (aka 22 Magnum) load that uses a segmented hollow point bullet with a polymer coating. The result is a zippy little round that will fragment when it hits the target and reduce barrel fouling. In fact, the company claims that suppressor build-up is reduced by as much as 80% when you use these rounds.
The Maxi-Mag load uses a 46-grain bullet with a muzzle velocity of 1,875 fps. They will be sold in boxes of 50 rounds with a suggested retail price of $17.95.
Federal Fusion 10mm Ammo
Federal announced a new 10mm load in its Fusion line of hunting ammunition. The new load uses a 200-grain JHP bonded bullet for maximum weight retention and deep penetration. The rounds will be sold in boxes of 20 with an MSRP of $27.95.
Federal Practice & Defend Packs: Syntech and HST
Federal Premium announced four new Practice & Defend Packs that contain 50 rounds of Syntech training ammunition and 50 rounds of HST defensive hollowpoint ammunition. These packs will be available in the following loads:
- 9mm 124 gr @ 1150 fps
- 9mm 147 gr @ 1000 fps
- .40 S&W 180 gr @ 1010 fps
- .45 ACP 230 gr @ 890 fps
Suggested retail prices will range from $60.95 to $73.95. Online prices will likely be much better when these hit to the distributor channels.
Speer Gold Dot Rifle Personal Protection
Speer unveiled a number of new rifle loads in its effective Gold Dot line of self-defense ammunition. The key to these is that they are designed for maximum performance from guns with barrels shorter than 16″. So all of those AR pistols and SBRs have new defensive ammo tailored for them.
The new loads break down like this:
Bullet Weight | Velocity | Energy | G1 BC
.223 Rem | 55 gr | 3,600 fps | 1,583 ft-lbs | .251 |
.223 Rem | 62 gr | 2,750 fps | 1,041 ft-lbs | .310 |
.223 Rem | 75 gr | 2,775 fps | 1,283 ft-lbs | .400 |
300 BLK | 150 gr | 1,900 fps | 1,203 ft-lbs | .330 |
.380 Win | 150 gr | 2,820 fps | 2,649 ft-lbs | .414 |
A few notes about the loads. First, the 55 grain .223 Rem load is designed with reduced penetration in mind. Even so, the company states that the loads are optimized for “peak FBI protocol performance” through short barrel rifles. So, I expect that the 55 grain loads will penetrate about 12″ of ballistic gelatin.
Second, the company advises that a 1:9″ twist or faster is recommended for the 75 grain load in the .223 Rem. I’d say that’s a given, but it is always nice to hear an ammo company warning consumers about issues that can alter performance.
Suggested retail prices are fairly reasonable for defensive ammunition. However, I hope to see lower prices from retailers.
Speer Gold Dot Carry Gun
Speer announced it was now offering a new line of self-defense handgun ammunition called Carry Gun. Designed for use in compact pistols popular for concealed carry, the Carry Gun line uses the G2 Gold Dot bullet. That projectile combines a shallow hollowpoint with a polymer plug for consistent penetration and expansion.
These new loads use lighter G2 bullets than the existing loads. They are:
- 9mm 135 grain G2 HP
- .40 S&W 165 grain G2 HP
- .45 ACP +P 200 grain G2 HP
The list prices on these rounds are $28.95 to 32.95 depending on the caliber. They will be sold in 20-round boxes.
“New” Loads for Federal HST
Without any doubt in my mind, the HST line of ammunition is one of the top defensive rounds available today. Federal is expanding the regular line for 2020 to include three new loads. They are:
- 9mm 124 grain HST +P
- .45 ACP 230 grain HST +P
- .357 SIG 125 grain HST
Federal already offers these loads in its law enforcement catalog. These will be now commercially available in 20 round packages. MSRP will run from $25.05 to $31.95 depending on the cartridge.
Federal Hydra-Shok Deep in .380 ACP
This is a welcome addition to the self-defense ammo options offered by Federal. The Hydra-Shok Deep is a re-design of the original Hyrdra-Shok round that took off in popularity 30+ years ago. While the original was great for its time, modern bullet design surpassed the Hydra-Shok line.
Keeping the brand alive, Federal redesigned the bullet construction to achieve consistent expansion and penetration to a minimum depth of 12″ in calibrated gelatin. At this SHOT Show, Federal is showing the new .380 ACP load in this line.
The new load uses a 99 grain bullet moving at 1,000 fps. The Hydra-Shok center post is more akin to a cone than the original. The brass is nickel-plated and the primers are sealed. These will be sold in boxes of 20 with a suggested retail price of $25.95.
Speer Gold Dot in 5.7×28
Speer is expanding its Gold Dot line of defensive ammunition to include the 5.7×28 cartridge. The load will use a 40-grain bullet. Speer will sell these in 50 round boxes. The MSRP is about $52, but the actual “street price” will likely be less. For example, Target Sports USA has the ammo (out of stock currently) listed at $34.99.
While the 5.37×28 isn’t new, the introduction of the Ruger-57 (scroll up for additional information on that gun) is likely to make new ammo in this caliber more viable from a sales perspective. It would seem that Ruger coordinated its gun development with Speer to ensure there was a top-shelf load available for the gun at launch. It will be interesting to see what companies will have holsters ready to go for the gun as well.
Barnes VOR-TX Expander Shotshells
Barnes Bullets is offering a new series of shotgun slugs called the VOR-TX Expander. The new loads will be made in both 12- and 20-gauge and in both 2.75″ and 3″ shells. All loads will use an all copper projectile with a polymer tip. The company claims “extreme expansion and penetration, even at extended range.” Barnes also states these new slugs have “unmatched accuracy.” The 12-gauge slugs will weigh 437 grains while the 20-gauge versions will come in at 250 grains.
Barnes LRX Boat Tail Bore Rider Bullets
New for 2020, the LRX Boat Tail Bore Rider bullets are an evolution of the TSX Tipped bullets. They feature a redesigned nose cavity for improved expansion and deep penetration at both long and close ranges. These will be sold as both components for hand loaders and in some of the Barnes VOR-TX LR ammunition offerings. The initial offering will be in .30-caliber (.308 diameter, 212 grains.)
Sierra Prairie Enemy Ammunition
Sierra Bullets expands its loaded ammunition offerings with a new line called Prairie Enemy. Designed for varmint hunting – especially prairie dogs – the new ammo is part of the company’s intentional expansion into the loaded ammo market. The exact loads have not yet been released, but expect some of the typical calibers such as .223 Rem. The company is also expected to support some of the newer cartridges including .224 Valkyrie.
Sierra – New Loaded Ammo
Sierra Bullets announced it would add loaded hunting ammunition in .223 Remington and 300 BLK in 2020. The rounds will use the company’s GameChanger bullets. These are open pocket hollowpoint bullets with a synthetic tip for better flight, chambering and expansion on impact.
Eley .38 Super Comp
Eley will introduce a new .38 Super load at the SHOT Show. This load is designed for competition and will use a 124 grain FMJ round nose bullet. The load will make major power factor and should only be used in guns that can handle the pressures.
Federal HammerDown Ammo
Lever guns continue to be extremely popular with many shooters including hunters. The guns tend to be handy and easy to move with while delivering considerable firepower.
Federal is now offering a new line of lever gun ammunition called HammerDown. This line was developed in conjunction with Henry Repeating Arms.
The new line will have six loads at launch (see below). While the traditional calibers like .30-30 are supported, I find the addition of the .327 Federal Magnum to be intriguing.
I’ve often mused that the .327 Magnum might make a great carbine cartridge. With Henry’s addition of the cartridge to its line of lever guns, it would seem that I’m not the only one thinking this. With the support of Henry, the .327 Mag might finally find its niche for long term success.
- .30-30 150 gr Bonded SP @ 2,390 fps
- .45-70 Gov’t 300 gr Bonded SP @ 1,850 fps
- .357 Magnum 170 gr Bonded SP @ 1,610 fps
- .327 Federal Magnum 127 gr JHP @ 1,650 fps
- .45 Colt (aka Long Colt or LC) 250 gr JHP @ 1,400 fps
- .44 Magnum 270 gr Bonded SP @ 1,715 fps
The company states that a 35 Remington load will be coming soon.
The MSRP for all cartridges except .45-70 is $19.99 for a box of 20. The .45-70 Gov’t is higher: $38.99.
Apex Ammunition Waterfowl Ammo
Apex will introduce a new line of premium waterfowl ammunition at the SHOT Show. The company will display the new loads at the Pop-Up Preview. Exact specifications are not yet available.
Marlin 150th Anniversary Ammunition
With the 150th anniversary of Marlin Firearms, Remingon launched a pair of rifles (above) and several ammo loads with special packaging. The loads include .30-30 Win, .35 Rem and .45-70 Gov’t. These will be out later in the year. No word on pricing yet.
Federal Force X2 Buckshot
Federal Premium is launching a 12 gauge shotgun load using its new Force X2 pellets. These copper-plated pellets are designed to split into two pieces on impact. The result is 18 smaller projectiles causing wounding in a body instead of 9.
Each of the pellets has a “hinge point” to help this split happen. The benefit is an increase in wounding channels while still having the tighter patterns that heavier shot tends to have when compared to lighter pellets.
Of course, there is no free ride. I expect that by halving the mass of each pellet, penetration will be significantly reduced. For anyone concerned about overpenetration, this may be a good choice for self-defense. Federal’s goal with this load is to still provide 12-16″ of penetration in calibrated gel.
The initial offering is expected to be a 2.75 shell with 9 pellets moving at 1,145 fps. It will be sold in boxes of 10 shells with a suggested retail price of $22.95. I expect the store price to be about $20/box.
Federal Punch
Federal is well known in the self-defense ammunition category, but one of the main complaints I hear is that the best loads – specifically the HST rounds – are too expensive.
While I believe the HST line is some of the best pistol ammo you can buy for personal protection, I can also appreciate that there are many people who are on tight budgets. The right to self-defense should not be contingent on your bank account. So, when there are good, affordable options, I like to talk about them.
Federal’s new Punch line of ammunition appears to be an affordable option for self-defense. Offered in the most popular handgun calibers, the new line uses a soft lead core with a scored copper jacket for good expansion with conventional construction.
The new loads:
- .38 Special 120 gr JHP
- .380 ACP 85 gr JHP
- 9mm 124 gr JHP
- .40 S&W 165 gr JHP
- .45 ACP 230 gr JHP
The good news is the rounds are expected to sell for around $11-15/box of 20. That’s not quite as cheap as plinking rounds, but it is significantly less than the premium loads.
Federal Terminal Ascent
These new hunting rounds from Federal Premium use a polymer tip (a patented technology called Slipstream) to allow for expansion at lower velocities. According to the company, bullets can expand at velocities up to 200 fps slower than similar bullets without the tip. This sounds to be technology similar to what Hornady has been using in some of its lines. The bullets are bonded meaning they should stay together and provide good penetration.
Ammunition will be offered for the following cartridges:
- 6.5 PRC – 130 grains @ 3,000 FPS
- 6.5 Creedmoor – 130 grains @ 2,825 FPS
- .270 WSM – 136 grains @ 3,240 FPS
- .270 Win – 136 grains @ 3,000 fps
- .280 Ackley Improved – 155 grains @ 2,930 FPS
- .28 Nosler – 155 grains @ 3,200 FPS
- 7mm Rem Mag – 155 grains @ 3,000 FPS
- .30-06 Sprg – 175 grains @ 2,730 FPS
- .308 Win – 175 grains @ 2,600 FPS
- .300 Win Mag – 200 grains @ 2,810 FPS
- .300 WSM – 200 grains @ 2,810 FPS
Pricing will range from $42.95 – $53.95 for a box of 20 depending on caliber. Street prices should be lower.
New Shooting Gear
From suppressors to stocks, from hunting jackets to rifle scopes – this is the section on new shooting gear from the SHOT Show.
Mantis X2 Dry Fire Training System
Manits announced a new firearms training system that is specifically geared toward dry fire training. The new X2 includes a tiny module that attaches to your handgun or rifle. The module sends data to your phone which analyzes your performance. Included in the phone app are a number of different shooting drills that push your capabilities and help you improve. Read my article: Mantis X2 Review – Dry Fire Done Right.
DeSantis Wild Hog Field Holster
DeSantis Gunhide announced a new field holster for many large single-action revolvers and 1911 pistols. The strong side or cross-draw belt holster is called the Wild Hog. Made of leather, the holster should also fit other large double action revolvers and handguns.
HiViz Lightwave H3 Express Sights
HiViz announced a new series of handgun sights called the Lightwave H3 Express sights. These new sights use a shallow V rear sights with a large, bright front sight to improve how quickly you can align them in stressful conditions. Express style sights have been used for many years on dangerous game rifles and in more recent times by other companies making handgun sights. For many people, the system is fast. These sights use a combination of tritium and fiber optics to provide good brightness in all light conditions. Currently, the sights are available for most Glock and Smith & Wesson Shield pistols.
Olight Warrior X Pro Flashlight
Olight introduced a new flashlight called the Warrior X Pro. It claims a total light output of 2,250 lumens and a peak beam intensity of 90,000 candelas. There appear to be built in step downs in light output, so don’t expect to get that output for more than 2 minutes. The company states the light is drop resistant to 3 meters and IPX8 rated. IPX8 means that it has not been tested for any particle intrusion (dust, etc.) but is submersible to a distance beyond 1 meter for a period of time exceeding 30 minutes. No specific data was immediately available. This is a thicker flashlight than typical handheld tactical lights. It uses a 21700 battery with 5,000 mAh.
Chevrolet Silverado Realtree Edition
Chevrolet announced the Realtree Edition of the Silverado pickup truck at SHOT Show 2020. The new truck is a limited run 2021 model year Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss. In a collaboration with Realtree, Chevrolet was able to add the distinctive camouflage styling to the truck to give it a great outdoors look.
Tetra Gun Hands-On Wipes
Tetra Gun announced a new product called Hands-On Wipes. Somewhat similar to Lysol wipes, these are designed to remove up to 99% of lead and other residues from your hands after shooting. A 50-count container is only $7.99 and is worth every penny. I frequently shoot where washing my hands isn’t an option. Having these about would allow me to get rid of the vast majority of contaminates if I need to grab a sandwich or snack from the truck.
Crimson Trace CMR-207
Crimson Trace announced a new light and laser combination unit for handguns and other guns. The CMR-207 attaches to the accessory rail of a firearm and provides 400 lumens of white light plus either a red or green supplemental aiming laser. Compared to the CMR-209, the new CMR-207 has twice as much light output in addition to the laser.
The CMR-207 operates on a single CR123A battery. The unit with a red laser will cost $219.99 while the brighter green laser will cost $249.99.
Burris RT-1, RT-3 Prism Sights
Burris announced a pair of new reflex-style sights designed for fast shooting in competition and tactical contexts. The RT-1 is a prism sight with a 2 MOA dot and 1x magnification. It has 9 brightness levels that can be manually set or adjust automatically based on the lighting conditions. Two brightness levels are NV compatible. It comes with both low and high base mounts. The MSRP is $299.
The RT-3 is similar in design, but it offers 3x magnification. It has a Ballistic 3x reticle that allows for holdover shots to 600 yards. The suggested retail price is $379.
Both units are water-/fog-/shockproof. Each is covered by the company’s Forever Warranty.
Steiner M8Xi IFS Scope
Welcome to the future. Steiner combined a 1-8xx56 scope with an advanced computer system and heads up display (HUD) for one of the most advanced tactical rifle scopes on the market. Built-in sensors and user-entered data are combined by the unit to present a firing solution in the HUD. Sensors measure temperature, barrometric air pressure, and incline of the scope. Using an app, you enter the distance to target and wind information. The M8Xi IFS makes the calculations and shows you the ballistic information for an accurate shot.
The scope is ruggedized for harsh environments and is rated as waterproof, fogproof and shockproof. It is powered by a pair of batteries: one AA and one CR2032. The MSRP is $7,199.99.
Bushnell Engage Optics Additions
Bushnell announced three new products in its Engage line: a 3-9×40 scope with an illuminated reticle, a 20-60×80 spotting scope and a 10×42 binocular. The scope has a 1″ tube, second focal plane design, and a fast-focus eyepiece. The reticle has six levels of brightness.
Built for hunters and shooters, the spotting scope has a meral chassis with rubber armor for durability in the field. It has the company’s EXO Barrier coating on the lenses to repel dirt and prints. It includes a Picatinny rail and a rotating tripod collar.
The Engage X binocular keeps the price low while still offering good low-light performance. They are submersible (up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes) so a little rain won’t bother them. The compact light and laser system was developed for unconventional warfare operators that needed a lightweight unit that could be used on both SBRs and handguns.
The unit operates on a single CR123A battery that loads from the front. Front loading eliminates the need to remove the unit with every battery change. The light output is 400 lumens. SureFire states the lights have a Maxvision Beam pattern for CQB and lists the peak beam intensity as only 820 candelas. In other words, the beam is fairly wide without a lot of downrange reach. For self-defense, room clearing and similar situations, it is probably ideal.

Consider the TLR-9 the big brother to the TLR-7 series of pistol lights. The TLR-9 runs on a pair of CR123A batteries and offers 1,000 lumens of total output with 10,000 candelas of peak beam intensity. Compared to the smaller TLR-7, this means more total light with a brighter center spot. Yet, the numbers also suggest that there is plenty of periphery light. Due to the size of this light, it appears best suited for full size (4″ barrel or longer) handguns.

Alien Gear Holsters Rapid Force Duty Holster
Alien Gear Holsters announced a new line of law enforcement duty holsters called the Rapid Force Duty Holster. The company states these rigs “set a new standard for law enforcement and military.” It appears the polymer holsters are adjustable to the individual officer for both ride height and cant. The draw from retention appears to be accomplished by pushing down and sweeping backward with the thumb. The company states the holsters offer “Level II or Level III retention,” but it is unclear if these classifications are in accordance with the law enforcement standardized retention levels established by Bill Rogers in 1975. I have reached out to the company for clarification.
Burris Eliminator IV Hunting Scope
Burris announced a new laser rangefinding hunting riflescope called the Eliminator IV. The 4-16×50 scope can use its internal rangefinding laser and ballistic computer to calculate distances and shots to 2,000 yards. Compared to prior generations, the onboard computer can resolve ballistic data quicker for rimfire, centerfire, muzzleloader and shotgun slug loads to calculate the precise holdover point – which then appears as a bright red aiming dot in the optic. The computer also takes into account wind hold-off and up/downhill shooting. This rear focal plane scope uses the X96 reticle and is water-, fog- and shockproof. MSRP: $2,039.

Further, the bolt notch accommodates all sizes of bolt heads and the stock has a low enough line to eliminate the need for ejection port relief. A thumb rest and ergonomic grip help to provide good hand placement.
A spacer system allows you to adjust the length of pull. It includes a 1″ decelerator pad. You can adjust the cheek riser for your prefered height. A squared forend allows for solid placement on a bag. The stocks are available for short and long actions and in a range of colors. Pricing runs from $700 – 900 depending on your choices.

Hatsan USA Volt Dual-Power Portable Compressor
If you spend much time shooting air guns, you know how helpful it is to have an electric pump to refill your cylinders. I’ve got a mechanical pump that works fine, but I’d still like one that I can just plug in. The new Volt Dual-Power Portable Compressor from Hatsan USA is a solid option for the field or closer to the house because it can run off of AC or DC power. If you are in the garage, plug it into the wall. Headed out the woods for a little shooting? Plug it into the cigarette lighter/accessory socket in your truck.
The unit has an auto-shutoff that is adjustable in 10-BAR increments. It has an internal fan and a number of thermal sensors and protective measures to ensure the portable pump doesn’t run hot. Comp-Tac refers to these as level two holsters with “two retention points.” Those points are described as “one on the back and one at the bottom.” I’ve requested additional information from the company for a clarification on the level two designation as I’m not sure it meets the Level II Retention. Read What is a Retention Holster for more information.

Helping to improve accuracy, the company uses its HyperFlite track that only contacts the nock and tip so that the shaft does not drag on the crossbow when fired. Along with other new features, Barnett states this model will launch an arrow at 420 fps and achieve up to 25% greater penetration. The crossbow ships fully assembled with a 1.5-5×32 scope for $1,599.99 (MSRP.)

It is also affordable at $79.99.
I own a SIG SAUER KILO850 and find that I rarely use it beyond 150 yards. A more affordable rangefinder like the CL300 would be a good buy for a lot of people.

Columbia River Knife and Tool offers good quality blades for reasonable prices. I’ve gotten a lot service from CRKT knives over the years. At the SHOT Show, the company is showing a number of its new blades including the Provoke First Responder knives.
The Provoke First Responder is a karambit style knife that folds in an unusual (for a knife) way. CRKT calls is a morphing karambit with Kinematic technology. The blade is said to deploy easily with a push of your thumb. Blades are 2.41″ long and made of D2 steel. You have a choice of a plain edge or a blade with the effective Veff serrations. The handle is made of 6061 T6 aluminum.
As this knife is geared toward police officers, paramedics and firefighters, CRKT elected to include a ceramic glass breaker as an integral part of this knife. Frankly, I think this is a great addition for anyone. The MSRP is $225.
Galco QuickTuk Cloud
Galco announced that J-frame Smith & Wesson revolvers are now available fits for the QuickTuk Cloud. The rig is designed for comfort and uses a new backer to help make this happen. According to the company, the side of the holster that rides against the body uses a closed-cell foam body that is covered by ballistic nylon. Then the company lines the body side with the company’s Comfort Cloth material. Comfort Cloth offers a very soft texture and has the added benefit of wicking away moisture. The adjustable UniClip allows you to tuck a shirt over the gun for improved concealment without the untucked look. MSRP is $55.
ScentLok Full Season Elements
ScentLok announced a new set of hunting clothes that offers great water resistance without the noise often associated with rain barrier membranes. The new Full Season Elements line offers both a jacket and pants that uses a very soft and quiet outer fabric that has been treated with Precip-X. This treatment provides a hydrophobic coating to keep water, mud and blood from penetrating your clothes.
Additionally, the tops of the shoulders, arms and hood have full waterproof panels to keep driving rain from penetrating the clothes. Other features include:
- bonded seams
- a soft, microfleece lining
- waterproof zippers on the pockets
- bonded seams
- adjustable cuffs
- articulated knees and elbows
- Carbon Alloy tech for odor absrobtion
The jacket is parka length and has zippered access for attaching your safety harness. A full range of sizes from small to 3XT will be available. The company plans to ship this line in June to make sure you have it in time for the fall hunting season. Patterns will include a range of Mossy Oak and Realtree selections.
Holsters for the Ruger-57
There are a number of companies already making holsters for the Ruger-57. These can be seen at the SHOT Show. I’ve assembled a list of Ruger-57 holsters here. As more holsters are announced, they will be added to the list.
Viridian E Series Laser for Ruger-57
Viridian Weapon Technologies announced it was now offering a laser sighting system for the Ruger-57 pistol. The new E Series laser mounts to the front of the trigger guard and can be turned on and off by tapping a switch on the side of the unit. While the Ruger-57 does have an accessory rail, the E Series laser will be much more compact than what a laser mounted to the rail will likely be. We don’t have an exact MSRP yet, but existing E Series units with a red laser sell for $132.
UTG Windowed Polymer AR Magazines
It seems that windowed magazines are all the rage at the moment. Not to be left out, UTG announced a new 30-round AR-15 magazine for the 5.56 NATO cartridge that features clear windows on the sides. Bodies of the magazines are made of black polymer while the windows are clear polymer. The anti-tilt follower is a bright blue polymer. Additional features of these magazines include a removable, flared base plate, stainless steel spring and a grip texture to improve your ability to grab and hold onto them when things are wet. The magazines are affordable with an MSRP of $14.97.
MDT Poly/Metal AICS Short Action Magazines
Modular Driven Technologies (MDT) announced it was now making a .308 Win magazine that is AICS Short Action compatible. The magazine uses a combination of polymer and metal parts for a blend of reliability and lightweight. The body is polymer with clear polymer windows on both sides. The feed lips are metal for long term durability. Magazines hold 10 rounds and have a MSRP of $49.95.
Primary Arms SLx 1-8×24 FFP Rifle Scope with Raptor Reticle
Primary Arms announced the company upgraded its flagship variable low-power rifle scope. The new optic offers 1-8x magnification (up from 1-6x). It has a first focal plane illuminated ACSS Raptor 5.56/5.45/.308 reticle.
According to the company, the scope is “a completely new [design] from the ground up…that emphasizes low distortion and accurate 1x magnification combined with a crisp clear sight picture at 8x.”
Mission First Tactical Extreme Duty Window AR Magazine
Mission First Tactical announced a new line of windowed AR-15 mags called Extreme Duty Magazine. These magazines will hold 30 rounds of .223 Rem/5.56 NATO ammo. Currently, the mags are available with black or scorched dark earth bodies and clear windows. Future versions will have colored window options and decorated bodies similar to the company’s other magazines. The MSRP is $14.99 each. They come with a lifetime warranty.
Verco MotilityMH Level III Armor
Verco Materials of Atlanta announced its new MotilityMH armor will be shown at the SHOT Show. This unique armor uses small, overlapping ceramic disks to form a complex armor system that can defeat rifle rounds. Each tile is wrapped in carbon fiber and encapsulated within layers of soft ballistic fabric. As I understand it, this offers superior multi-hit protection and comfort when compared to a standard, monolithic plate. Each body armor system is custom-fitted and can offer coverage that standard systems do not. Special Note: This armor is listed with the NIJ as Level III certified. Many of the armor companies out there are not NIJ certified. Be careful with what you buy!
Surge Stock Kit
Trinity Force announced it will show a new AR stock at the SHOT Show. The new stock is called Surge. The Surge Stock Kit uses a minimalist style polymer stock that is designed to be light and bulk-free. Not a lot of information is available yet, but the company states it will have QD attachment points, a textured butt pad and a patent-pending locking system. Also, the company says the kit will be backed by a lifetime warranty. No word on pricing and I apologize for the blurry image. I’m trying to get a better one.
Arma Spall Covers
A lot of people are buying up rifle plates and other body armor. I can’t blame them and own some of my own.
The least expensive armor tends to be made of steel. While it can be effective, it also has the nasty effect of spraying metal shrapnel (aka spall) in all directions. To combat this some manufacturers have taken to adding a coating over the surface of the steel to trap spall.
Arma Products has a spall cover product that applies to the surface of metal plates to capture any bits of shrapnel. The covers can be fabricated to any size and can be had in a range of color and camo options.
BulletSafe Crotch Protector
BulletSafe announced a new bit of protection called the Crotch Protector. As the name suggests, it offers bullet resistance to the groin. The product is a “one size fits all” panel that attaches to your existing bullet-resistant vest and hangs down.
The company states it “…is made from the same material as our Level IIIA bulletproof vest.” This suggests that the panel has not been independently tested to NIJ 0101.06 compliance. While it will likely work, I always recommend caution when buying life saving gear that has not been tested by an independent source. They are very affordable at only $99.
Alien Gear Rapid Force Duty Holster
Developed for law enforcement and security, the new Rapid Force Duty Holster is designed as a Level III security rig. While I hope it is a quality holster, I simply do not trust any duty rig not made by Safariland. While that is incredibly biased, it comes from years of law enforcement training and working the streets. I’ve seen a number of rigs fail in both locations. I’ve never seen a Safariland duty holster fail.
That said, I do wish the best to Alien Gear on this. I just hope they’ve put a lot of R&D into it before they sell a single one to anyone that needs it.
Highland Tactical Precision 37″ Double Rifle Case
Highland Tactical announced it will show the new Precision 37″ double rifle case at the SHOT Show. The new case is the company’s first rifle case, and they built some interesting features into it.
In addition to stowing two rifles, the case has a detachable pistol bag on the outside of the case. It also comes with a pair of rifle magazine pouches that attach to the MOLLE webbing on the outside of the case. Finally, the company built shoulder straps (with a sternum strap) into the bag that zip away into a hidden compartment.
Pricing is reasonable – starting at $69.99.
Basketweave Holstex for Holsters
CKK Industries announced a new thermomold material in its Holstex line. The new material will have a traditional basketweave pattern commonly seen in law enforcement duty gear and many traditional, leather holsters.
The new material will be offered in 15 different colors and in three thicknesses (0.080, 0.093 and .125). The products will be on display at the SHOT Show and shipping should being in March.
Aero Healthcare RapidStop Tourniquet
Aero Healthcare will show its new RapidStop TQ at the SHOT Show. This is a new system that uses a ratcheting system to stop blood loss.
Every time I see a new TQ introduced, I am leary of the marketing but excited for the possibility of a quicker, easier to use system that can save lives. In the video below, the company runs its system head-to-head with three others. It looks good – but I urge caution until we get independent, third-party testing of these.
Zeta6 Speedloaders
Zeta6 will be at the SHOT Show demoing the company’s new J-Clip and J-Strip speedloaders for 5-shot, J-frame revolvers. These loaders are made of polyurethane and fit many Smith & Wesson, Taurus and Rossi revolvers. They are not compatible with the Ruger LCR line of wheel guns.
I’ve had several of the Zeta6 Speedloaders in my office for a couple of months now. They seem to be a high-quality item and are holding up well with my range use.
Konus Night Vision
Konus announce it will show three new night vision products at the 2020 SHOT Show. They are:
- 3-8x 50 riflescope (MSRP: $1,299)
- 3.5-7x 50 binocular (MSRP: $489.99)
- 1-5x Compact Monocular (MSRP: $399.99)
The company states all three are suitable for daylight, night time and (with an IR illuminator) in total darkness.
Apex Tactical Mounting Plate for FN 509 Pistols
Apex Tactical Specialties announced a new mounting plate for its optics that will fit the FN 509 optics ready pistols. This includes the new 509 Compact announced at the SHOT Show. The plate uses the factory screws and will cost only $24.95.
Lee Automatic Processing Press
Lee Precision offers some of the best values in the reloading industry. One of the company’s newest products is the APP or Automatic Processing Press. As the name suggests, this is not a tool for loading ammunition. Rather, it is a tool for speeding up the case and bullet prep work prior to the loading stage.
Dies can be mounted to the top or bottom of the press allowing for a great deal of flexibility. It uses the company’s Breech Lock bushings for fast die changes. From this single tool, you can size cast bullets, swage the primer pocket, deprime a case and bulge bust.
The real key, however, is the automated system that will cycle the bullets and cases without your interaction. All you do is pull the handle.
Here’s a video of military primer pockets being de-crimped:
Right now, these are in pre-order. Lee Precision hopes to ship these in January. The APP press has a MSRP of $75 while the deluxe version will retail for $110.
Caldwell E-MAX Shadows
Caldwell will roll out a number of new hearing protection options in 2020 at the SHOT Show. One of them is the new E-MAX Shadows in-ear plugs.
The E-MAX Shadows are Bluetooth capable plugs that will offer 24 dB of sound attenuation. While not as good as some muffs and other plugs, 24 dB is still a fair amount of protection.
Resembling many of the modern BT phone “pods,” the E-MAX Shadows have built in rechargeable batteries and are said to offer high-fidelity sound. They also have dual mics for improved directional sound when worn.
I hope these are a quality offering. The company’s inexpensive E-MAX muffs are a pretty good buy for the money (read my Caldwell E-MAX Electronic Ear Pro Review here) but the Platinum Series muffs were awful (read my Caldwell Platinum Series G3 Ear Pro Review here.)
If they can reproduce music well, these might be a good choice for your next flight in addition to the next trip to the range. No word yet on pricing, though I expect it to be much less than anything coming from Apple.
Rise Armament Blitz Trigger
Rise Armament will introduce a new drop-in trigger called the Blitz. Details about the new Blitz trigger are limited, but it is supposed to be quite a nice feeling trigger with a shallow curve to bridge the gap between flat-faced and standard curve triggers. More information will be added when it becomes available.
Wilson Combat Quell Titanium
In addition to 1911 pistols, Wilson Combat is involved in other pistols, shotguns, ammunition and sound suppressor production. The latest “silencer” from the company is the Quell Titanium.
The Quell is is a rifle suppressor designed to be compact and lightweight. According to the company, these cans are less than 7″ long and weigh about 9 ounces. It is a sealed design with high tolerances to allow for less than a 1 MOA shift.
These new suppressors can be had for any non-Magnum rifle and are in a variety of diameters from 6.5 to .358. Pricing starts at a bit over $1k.
Luth-AR MBA-5 Buttstock
In October, Luth-AR announced its new MBA-5 Buttstock for the AR-style rifle. The new polymer stocks use a paddle to make adjustments, have a short Picatinny rail in the back for a monopod and have a flared cheek rest that is said to improve comfort. While not introduced at the SHOT Show, these will be on display as part of the company’s 2020 offerings. They have a MSRP of $49.95.
SHOT Show Rumors
New gun rumors are always fun, and no one should ever take these too seriously. That said, we’ve hit some pretty big ones in the past.
Blackwater Ammo 2011 Pistol – Mr.Handgun found this one for us, and I located the photo on tactikulltarzan’s IG page. It looks like there will be a Blackwater Ammunition branded, 2011-style pistol at the SHOT Show. No confirmed information is known, but it looks to me that this is a double-stack handgun in the general 1911 design with extensive upgrades. The styling is unique with the familiar Blackwater logo. If I had to guess – and I am – I’d say this is a limited edition pistol made by CK Arms of Camilla, GA.
Update: Iron Horse Firearms just announced that they are now Blackwater Firearms. That was unexpected.
Howa 1100 Varmint Rife – This rumor – probably real gun – comes to us from reader Foster Price who located this gun on a retailer site in Australia. I did a little searching and found the same gun on several other sites operated by Australian gun shops. So, the rifle looks legitimate. Will it be introduced at the SHOT Show? Probably.
As the sites show, this will be a bolt action rimfire rifle that deeds from a detachable magazine. It will be offered in .22 LR (10-round mag) and .22 WMR (5-round mag.) It is shown with an 18″ threaded barrel and synthetic stock. After figuring the exchange rate, the price looks to be about $411 US.
Tandemkross Upriser – This is a confirmed product for the Ruger PC Carbine. I just don’t know what it is yet. When I find out more, I’ll update you.
Glock 49 in 10mm – Dong’s Guns of Tulsa, OK posted an Instagram photo of what appears to be information on a new Glock 49 pistol chambered in 10mm. The gun would be a G5 model and feed from 8 round magazines. Interesting. I’m trying to confirm this information now. The SKU or product ID doesn’t seem to match anything I can find. The Glock SKU is likely PA195S414AB while this company appears to append a GL to the front of the SKU.
Taurus TS9 in the US – One of the guns that many Taurus fans have been waiting for is the TS9. This striker-fired pistol is available internationally, but not in the United States. However, that may change in 2020 if the rumors are true. The TS9 is duty sized and bears a similar appearance to the company’s TX22 which is offered in the US market.
Taurus Model 30 – Taurus used to make a revolver chambered for the .30 Carbine cartridge. A rumor I’ve heard states that during the document updating at Taurus (updating everything to show a Bainbridge, GA address) a product sheet for the Model 30 revolver slipped out. The document supposedly shows a 10″ barrel gun. Older guns made for the cartridge could be had with either 10″ or 12″ barrels. I’ve not seen the document, and I’m not putting a lot of faith in the rumor. If they release this, maybe the company will also bring back the Model 218 in .218 Bee?
MM M10XP – M+M Industries is going to launch a pistol version of its M10X 7.62×39 rifle if rumors are to be believed. The new gun will feature the same action and will come with a quad rail forend. It will not have an arm brace, but you would be able to add one if you like.
Sarsilmaz K12 Sport in USA – I’m hearing that SAR USA may announce the importation of the K12 Sport at the SHOT Show. The K12 is a competition-styled pistol chambered for the 9mm. It definitely has a race gun look to it. See the photo below.
Ruger SR32 Pistol – There is a rumor floating that suggests Ruger is developing a .32 ACP pistol for 2020. This would be an ultra-compact pistol – smaller than even the LCP. If Ruger holds to its normal pattern, it will introduce its new gun offerings prior to the SHOT Show – late December and early January.
Speer Carry Gun Ammunition – Rumors are floating about a either a new or a rebranded version of Gold Dot ammo called “Carry Gun” ammunition. It is unclear if this is just the original Gold Dot that has been repackaged or something new. According to my sources, the ammo will be available in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP and sold in 20 round boxes.
Ruger AR-2 Rifle – Another good Ruger rumor is the company will introduce a .22 LR rifle in AR form. Ruger is known for its incredibly popular 10/22 line of rifles. However, there is a lot of demand for .22 rimfire AR rifles.
Currently, the company makes a number of limited-run “tactical” 10/22 rifles for TALO Distributors. These guns have some AR-style furniture, but they are still 10/22 guns. This rumor is clear that these would be AR receivers – not 10/22.
150th Anniversary of Marlin Rifle – 2020 is the 150th anniversary of Marlin Firearms, and I’m hearing that Remington will be issuing a commemorative rifle and ammunition to mark the event. While I know many collectors despise Remington’s involvement with Marlin, at least Big Green isn’t forgetting the anniversary.
(Update: I was able to confirm these rumors. There will be two rifles and a trio of lever action loads. Scroll up to see these.)
Smith & Wesson 9mm EZ Pistol – I’ve heard through some back channels that Smith & Wesson is likely to introduce a new 9mm pistol that will feature many of the same things that the M&P 380EZ has. I would expect to see this with a grip safety, easy racking slide and optional thumb safety. If the company is looking to make a big splash, it might also offer Crimson Trace models and a two-tone version.
(Update: Less than 24 hours after posting this, the company made an announcement of the M&P 9EZ. See the information in the new handgun section above.)
Hydra-Shok Deep in .380 ACP – The Hydra-Shok brand continues to be a viable choice for self-defense some four decades after Tom Burczynski began developing it. For the new year, I’m hearing the Hydra-Shok Deep line is expanding with a new .380 ACP load. No word on bullet weight or velocity information.
(Update: Rumor confirmed. Details on this load are in the ammunition section above.)
Coffee from Federal Premium – Ok, this sounds a bit weird, but I heard a rumor that Federal would offer some kind of coffee product. Before you completely dismiss this one, I hear the Black Rifle Coffee Company does good business. Maybe Federal is looking to make a play in this niche?
(Update: It turns out Black Rifle Coffe Company is making a Federal blend with the company’s brand in a partnership program. I guess I was the last to learn about this? It’s $16 for a 12 oz package.)
SIG SAUER Fury – SIG is going to introduce a new ammo product with the name Fury. What is it? A new line of self-defense ammo? Maybe a new hunting round?
(Update: As we’ve discovered, Fury refers to a new cartridge called the 277 SIG FURY. This is a specialty cartridge developed as the company’s entry into the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program. The new SIG CROSS rifle can be chambered in this cartridge.)
Colt Python – Yes, every year someone starts a rumor of Colt bringing the Python back. According to Brett (scroll down to the comments,) new Pythons have shipped to selected distributors. While I have a wait & see approach to Colt rumors, it is not likely that new Pythons will be the same as old Pythons from the quality standpoint. All of the original machinery and craftsmen are long gone. The new models – if made – will likely be very good, but may not measure up to expectations.
Update: It’s starting to look real. Reader Brett located this video that appears to show a modern Python. What do you think?
Attending SHOT Show 2020
The annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show is an annual industry event designed for manufacturers, dealers and distributors to conduct business.
Conducted in January of every year, the show is an opportunity for the industry to plan for the new year. With political turmoil in the United States, there will be much for industry insiders to talk about. Will this be another soft year, or will we see incredible sales as we did during the Obama administration?
The SHOT Show is not open to the general public. It is a trade show that is designed for business. If you are not a member of the firearms industry but are interested in attending a huge gun show, I recommend attending the NRA Annual Meetings in the spring. That is open to all NRA members.
Some members of the media are invited to the show – and I am one of them. In conjunction with some of my writers, I provide coverage of the show – new guns, early announcements, product leaks and even some of the crazy SHOT Show rumors that I hear.
If you have a tip, feel free to e-mail me. I don’t always have time to respond to everyone due to the incredibly hectic pace of the run-up to the show, but I appreciate every single one of you who share information with me. I always keep confidences and protect my sources.
Attendance Tips
From years past, here are a few tips to help you plan for your SHOT Show adventure.
- Comfortable shoes and dress – The SHOT Show is a business event, but you will literally walk miles every day. Unless you have a specific meeting that dictates otherwise, ditch the tie and go business casual. Keep your shoes comfortable also. Rockports trump fancy Italian leather in this case. If you can get away with it, comfortable boots are also a popular option.
- Water, Snacks – There are limited water fountains, so bring your own. Las Vegas is a dry place and you don’t want to dehydrate. While there are food options, they are limited and expensive. If you can grab a hearty breakfast and make it on snacks you bring throughout the day you’ll save a bunch of time and money.
- Sanitizer – There are tens of thousands of people in tight quarters. I don’t think we need to have a lesson on the Black Death to make the point that you should make liberal use of hand sanitizer, soap and water throughout the week.
- Pack or Bag – Regardless of your reason for being at the show, everyone will try to push brochures, catalogs and other stuff into your hands. You need a way to carry it all around. Do not get a wheeled cart. The floor is crowded and those jam up the aisles.
- Positive Attitude – Hey, being in the gun industry is a lot better than most other fields. Smile and appreciate how good we have it.

Wow. Thank you so much for all of th einformation! I hate bouncing around and rather come to one place and get all of the SHOT Show details. Thank you! That new Force X2 ammo looks hot!
Hello (from down in New Zealand)
Some Aussie retailers have listed a Howa Model 1100 – a new 22RF rifle which seems to be of the PRS trainer type (see half way down this page – https://www.cleaverfirearms.com/Products.aspx?Category=Rifles&Brand=113 ) but delivery is not till mid February. Our NZ distributor confirmed they’d seen a sample but then “clammed up” – I suspect there is going to be a launch at SHOT. A report would be great if you’re going by the Legacy stand . . .
Thanks for the heads up Foster. I’ll see what I can find out for you at the show.
-Richard
I have reason to believe blackwater ammo will be releasing a 2011 variant that will compete with the sti staccatos and at a cheaper price point.
Very interesting! I look forward to seeing what they have come up with.
-Richard
They just released pictures on their Instagram story
Checking now – thanks!
