Magpul iPhone 5 Case: A quick Review

I picked up a Magpul iPhone 5 case in OD green about a month ago after my OtterBox was no longer serviceable. The case is made of a textured plastic that snaps over the back and sides of the iPhone. It has the distinctive Magpul logo and waffle grip pattern on the case.

There are openings for the camera, flash, speakers, audio jack and lightning cable port. All of the 1/8″ headphone plugs I tried (six different pairs) with the Magpul case worked fine. A car adaptor in my wife’s car, however, had a body that was too thick to plug into the audio jack. I’ve noticed that patch cables tend to have thicker bodies, so I suspect that many will not fit through the Magpul case without some trimming of the case or the cable.

The New Chiappa Poly Lite Rhino Revolver

Looking for a new polymer framed revolver? The new Chiappa Poly Lite Rhino was recently shown to wholesalers at the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) Expo. The new gun is a derivation of the existing Rhino line, but with some significant differences.

The PolyLite Rhino will be available only in .38 Special, not in .357 Magnum like the other revolvers in this series of guns. Presumably, the polymer is not strong enough to handle the repeated shooting of Magnum pressures. It is not yet known if the revolver will be rated for the +P loads, or standard pressure only.

Hornady Security: RAPiD Safe

Hornady Security RAPiD safe

The RAPiD Safe is the first product introduced by Hornady Security, a new division of Hornady Manufacturing (the bullet people.) The safe addresses the issue of quickly accessing a firearm if needed, yet keeping the gun secure if it is not.

There are a variety of products on the market that use a mechanical or electronic keypad, a key, a fingerprint reader, traditional keys or some combination of the above. Each has weaknesses: keypads can be difficult to operate under stress, electronic keypads often “beep,” fingerprint readers are not 100% reliable, and keys can be hard to find and use in the dark. Hornady Security’s RFID (radio frequency ID) solution may be an excellent solution to the problem.

Edge Arms Reliant Pistol: Quad Barrel .22 Magnum

I find the new Edge Arms Reliant pistol to be a very intriguing concealed carry handgun. It is a four barrel, subcompact pistol chambered in .22 WMR (aka .22 Magnum). A second pistol chambered in .17 HMR will also be manufactured. The pistol uses a break open design, not unlike the DoubleTap pistol.

A lack of a slide, cylinder and external hammer means the gun can be reliably fired from a concealed location (such as from within a jacket pocket*) or in contact with an assailant’s body with little chance of malfunction. Edge Arms highlights this fact on the company’s website, stating “shoots every time, cannot jam from ammo misfeed or ejection.”
