The number of varmint hunters has rapidly increased in the recent past. According to Winchester, this segment of the market has doubled in the past decade. Understandably, ammo companies are moving to meet the specific needs of these hunters.
LaserLyte has a new training pistol: the Trigger Tyme. If you read the marketing materials on the training gun, it would seem to be an ideal tool, especially for Glock shooters. But does it live up to that description?
The LaserLyte training pistol is a blue plastic training gun that approximates the size and trigger pull of a Glock 19/23 pistol. Unlike a Glock, the Trigger Tyme resets the trigger automatically after each pull.
The pistol does not contain a laser on its own. The user must purchase a LaserLyte LT-PRO separately, which inserts into the end of the Trigger Tyme’s “barrel.” While the separate purchase may be a bit of a pain for some people, the LT-PRO can still be used with normal firearms allowing for a greater degree of training flexibility.
The Trigger Tyme does not have a working slide and it is impossible to insert ammo into it. So, other than a laser beam in the eye, the gun is very safe to use. There cannot be any accidental or negligent discharges with this training gun.
Kel-Tec is jumping into the flashlight game with the introduction of the unique CL-43.
The CL-43 definitely stands out from the crowd, by the use of a switching system that is backward when compared to many traditional lights. The activation switch faces toward the target, and to activate the light, the user presses toward the back of the light.
The idea is the light can be extended out in an instinctive way and activated in a manner similar to simply closing one’s fist. I don’t know if this design offers a superior way of using a while light in a stress environment, but the idea is intriguing.
Kel-Tec claims the design of the flashlight “makes it possible to hold and operate parallel with a handgun without impairing a conventional two handed hold.” Additionally, the company states “If required, and with some training, the light can be operated one-handed together with the gun.”
The switch has both a constant and momentary on mode.
Smith & Wesson, one of just a few publicly traded gun companies, released a statement announcing preliminary sales and profit data for the second quarter of fiscal year 2013. The numbers were a significant improvement compared to the same time one year ago and beat previous expectations for this quarter.
According to S&W, net sales were up $44 million, or about 48%, compared to the second quarter of fiscal year 2012. Net income is expected to be between $0.23 and $0.24 per diluted share, which is above the company’s prior guidance of $0.19 to $0.21, and well above last year’s $0.01 per share.

I was sitting outside the main hall at the 2012 NASGW Expo working on an article when I was approached by a man asking if I was in the media. When I said “yes,†the man introduced himself as Jim Bruchas, the director of sales for Heizer Defense. The next few minutes reminded me that even in such a friendly industry as the gun business, feelings can get hurt and egos bruised.
For those not already familiar, Heizer Defense was, until recently, associated with DoubleTap Firearms, the developers of the DoubleTap two-shot pistol. DoubleTap Firearms issued a press release in October announcing a parting of ways between the two companies, stating that Heizer’s inability to manufacture the DoubleTap pistol prompted the split. After the split, DoubleTap Firearms changed names to DoubleTap Defense and partnered with Azimuth Technology to make the DoubleTap pistol.
