Looking for $1,000 to spend on shooting, hunting and outdoor gear?  Sign up for the giveaway at AllOutdoor.com.  They are giving away a $1k gift card to Cabellas on June 15.  Five additional people will win $200 gift cards.

Another Acquisition

Bullet and ammunition manufacturer Nosler finalized a deal to purchase Silver State Armory (SSA).  SSA makes high quality ammunition for hunting, law enforcement and the military.  I met the guys from SSA several years ago at the SHOT Show, and was impressed by the staff and their products.  Nosler is known for high quality, so hopefully this will be a good deal for not just Nosler and SSA, but for consumers also.

DoubleTap Equalizer Ammo

DoubleTap Equalizer ammo uses two projectiles in a single cartridge to deliver a devastating blow on the target: both game animals and criminal attackers. The projectiles are of different design, each wounding the target in different manners.

The exposed bullet is a standard jacketed hollowpoint. The second projectile is stacked under the hollowpoint and is solid lead. Exact configuration of the second projectile – ball or wadcutter type bullet – depends on the load. There are some great photos of these cartridges and bullets at the IAA forum here.

Bushnell ImageView Binocular with HD Recorder

As a kid, I always wished I could take pictures through my binoculars.  It wasn’t that I was unhappy with the binoculars I had – quite the opposite.  The Bushnell binoculars that dad bought me weren’t fancy, but they were mine.

Bushnell ImageView binoculars

The family was on a tight budget and our Christmas gifts were frugal.  But when I got the binoculars, I was exceptionally happy.  For a kid who spent his days climbing trees and building forts in the woods with his friends, that set of binoculars was just about the perfect gift dad could have bought me.

Even so, in my mind’s eye I could see me capturing the images I saw through them to share with my family later.  But, that was a long time ago and digital cameras were a thing of Star Trek.  Today, however, things are different.

Earlier this year, Bushnell introduced the new ImageView 8×30 binocular that has the ability to capture not just photos, but HD video as well.  The camera is a 12 megapixel camera, which means it captures roughly three times the pixels (data) than the high-end Canon 1d camera I used to photograph major league baseball games as a stringer for Sports Illustrated some 10 years ago.

Magpul MOE Fixed Carbine Stock

Magpul announced a new addition to their popular MOE line of products – the   MOE Fixed Carbine Stock.  Available in both Mil-Spec and Commercial models the Fixed Carbine Stock provides shooters with another option to satisfy their personal preferences, or State-mandated rifle accessories.  The new addition is specifically designed for Carbine-length buffer tubes.

The MOE Fixed Carine Stock has many similar features of the popular MOE collapsible stock.  Unlike the previous MOE fixed stock option, the MOE Rifle Stock, the new Fixed Carbine Stock has an open frame that closely resembles the look of the collapsible stock version.  The open frame is a little longer and larger than the collapsible stock version, and there is a fixed spacer at the front of the stock.  That spacer is designed to envelope the bottom half of the castle nut.

Wednesday’s gun news…

Colt Mustang XSP

Announced at the NRA Annual Meetings and Expo earlier this month, the new Mustang XSP is a polymer-framed version of the single-action .380 ACP pistol.  Do not think that this is the same pistol just with a plastic frame.  Colt made a number of changes in the frame that many shooters will like.  For example, there is a relief cut into the frame, behind the trigger guard, which allows the shooter to get a grip higher up on the gun.

gun newsOther enhancements on the new Mustang XSP include an ambidextrous safety, dovetailed front sight and short accessory rail.  Total weight of the pistol is less than 12 ounces (unloaded) and the MSRP is $649.  For now the frame is black, but polymer frames allow for relatively easy color additions to the handgun line.  Don’t be surprised to see an OD green, FDE or even pink Mustang XSP in the future.

The AR-15: Practical, Tactical or TACTI-COOL!

The American Gunsmithing Institute released a new gunsmithing DVD on customizing the AR-15 rifle.  The video course starts with an overview of different customization options that are available for the rifles, and then launches into a number of project builds for different needs.  The course is taught by a master gunsmith with decades of experience with the AR platform.  The DVD retails for $79.95.
